Cornwall / Re: William Thomas Menhennett born 7 Feb 1858 Bodmin.
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 12:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi Val,
I'm interested in a post you put on Roots last year June re. a William Thomas Menhennett.I have a Johana Menhenett born 1868 in Plymouth to a John Menhennet and Elizabeth Bray. This couple were married in Bodmin in 1855 and had a son William born there 1858.John must have died before 1871 -I found Elizabeth in Plymouth with William 14 (errand boy),Martha 11,Richard 7 and Johanna 3.She was widowed and working as a charwoman.By 1881 Johana was in an orphanage school.I think the William must be the one you have the record for and would love to know whether it gives any more family details.
 Thanks ,
Joan Olusanya

Sutherland / Brick wall-Donald Sutherland-Sutherland
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 12:07 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor Margaret Sutherland who married a John McDonald in Edinburgh in 1805.The marriage registration says her father, Donald Sutherland was a farmer ,Sutherland.John was in the Forfarshire Militia residing in Inveresk Barracks at the time of the marriage. The only birth for Margaret that fits from the Familysearch site is one born in Golspie 29-2-1780,father Donald-no mother's name.I doubt that John McDonald  could be from Sutherland so am guessing he met Margaret in Edinburgh.Unfortunately by the time John and Margaret's daughter Margaret McDonald,  got married in Edinburgh in 1827,John Mcdonald was dead-no mention of the mother of course on that marriage reg.Does anyone have any information on a Donald Sutherland ,farmer in Sutherland around 1780-1805?
       Many thanks,          Oyinda

Selkirkshire / Re: 1841 Selkirk lookups available.
« on: Saturday 10 December 05 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Dawn,
Can you check out this family in the 1841 and 1851 census for Ettrick please? James Little, born 1804 Hutton,Dumfriesshire, wife Mary Laidlaw, born 1805? Hawick. He was a shepherd  on a farm called Chapelhope and I believe he lived in a cottage called Kercleuch in the Yarrow valley for about 40 years from around 1840.It would be helpful to know who was in the house at the time of the censuses. Also his father,Matthew Little for the 1841 census-a bit of a longshot as he was born 1767-he was alive in a house called Glenkerry in Ettrick(about 3 miles south of Ettrick village )in 1827.Also a shepherd and born in Hutton.
                       Many thanks,

Dumfriesshire / Re: Death & Burial Indexes Canonbie, Eskdalemuir, Ewes Parish
« on: Thursday 08 December 05 10:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Isobel. Thanks for checking.I doubt this Thomas could be the one.My Matthew would have been 17 in 1785 and he ,Matthew I mean, was definitely still in Hutton parish or nearby until at least 1809.The first child was born at Kilburn which is in Eskdalemuir, the second at Mosspeeble in Ewes and the last three at Finnigal and Dryfehead in the upper Dryfe valley in Hutton.
Matthew Little b.1767 m.Elizabeth Brown in Dumfriesshire. It's registered in Hutton but after the event as records were not being kept there between about 1760 and 1801 when a new minister arrived.
ch.1:Thomas b.1800 married Margaret Elliot,then Janet Murray,emigrated to Ontario
2:Henrietta b.1802,married William Scott in Ettrick, emigrated to Ontario
3:James b1804(my ancestor) married Mary Laidlaw in Ettrick.Lived there all his life as shepherd on Chapelhope farm.
4:Jane b.1807,died Ettrick 1823
5:John,b1809 married Elisabeth Anderson.Lived in Roughlee,Roxburgh and latterly in Northumberland
Matthew and Elisabeth were in Glenkerry Ettrick by the 1820s.She died there 1827.I haven't found his death yet.
James' son Matthew Little married Elizabeth Ross from Lochmaben and had 9 children. The oldest was John Ross Little,my g grandfather. All these men were shepherds across the borders. On the other hand the Thomas Littles and in fact most of the Littles in Hutton parish at the time seem to have been tenant farmers.I just have a feeling that the sons of farmers would be more likely to stay with farming-what do you think?
        Bye and thanks again,

Hello Isobel,
Can you look for a Thomas Little born about 1745 in Hutton and Corrie in the death indexes you have. His wife is likely to be Henrietta but I know nothing more except that they were the parents of my gggg grandfather,Matthew Little, born 1767 at Newtown,Boreland,Hutton. He was a shepherd.
                    Many thanks,
