Graveyards and Gravestones / Craigton Cemetery - Glasgow
« on: Thursday 26 October 23 00:24 BST (UK)  »
I've found some relatives buried in Craigton Cemetery - judging by the burial records, I'm sure it says section U. I don't have the original lair record because I don't know when it was purchased, but the deaths I know of begin around 1891.
Looking at the map/layout for Craigton there doesn't seem to be a section U.
Has anyone else came across this? Is U a newer section, not noted on the layouts? Or could I be reading wrong?
Attached a snippet of the Lair/Section.
Thanks.

We have two Joseph Dias in the family tree.
Joseph Dias the father was born 1856-10-07 and lived until 1930-03-09.  He was a butcher.
Joseph Dias (his son) was born 1888-08-12 and died around 1918.

No record of Horsburgh in our tree.

Alexander and Margaret (Dias) Henderson are our known Canadian ancestors.

The Horsburghs are closer to my side of our Dias ancestry :)

Proof, I think:

Margaret Silverstine died Sept 1909, Seatown Buckie
2nd marriage to Marquis Silverstine, tailor.
Parents - Thomas Ross, coachman and Margaret Ross. Both deceased. (This fits with Margaret's DC)

Gadget

Thankyou so much. Off to do more investigating!

Thanks all, I will try and piece together more parts of their family and see if anything comes up.  :)

Menzies?

Surname looks like selcisstoni  is that a name?  Doesn’t really go with Menzies

That's what I was thinking the surname looked like too. I'll maybe need to do a bit more digging and see if it fits.

Looking at the death certificate for a Margaret Ross in 1880 in Banffshire, I just can't seem to make out the name of her son in law who signed it.
Any ideas?

Scotland / Re: Ballingall/Gall surname

I didn't realise how long ago I posted this and forgot to reply..

In my tree I have James Ballingall who married Margaret MacLeod in 1839 and they had a son John in 1840 (both were in Perth and both of which I have the certs for).

In the 1841 census theres a James "Gall", his wife Margaret McLeod and their son John living in Perth.

Then the 1851 census - what I'm assuming is the same family are still living in Perth but this time with the surname Ballingall.

I've no record of my James Ballingalls death, although there is a James Gall who died in Perth in 1856, with no mention of a wife and it was signed by his brother Alex.

1861 and 1871 census (still in Perth) have a Margaret "Gall" who was widowed by the 1861 census, which fits with the death of James Gall.

I descend from their son John who married Helen Taylor in 1864 in Glasgow but he is living alone (as John Ballingall) in the 1871 census.
There's a "Helen Taylor or Gall" and children (who would match the Ballingall children I have certs for) living in Perth in 1871.

From then on, all records (that I'm aware of) have the name Ballingall.

I'd been trying to go back further than James Ballingall but because it goes back and forth between Gall and Ballingall I wasn't sure if it was the same family. It all just seems too similar not to be.

I hope that all made sense.

I've been working on the Ballingall part of my tree and there are certain census/certs I can't find, but there are ones that could fit the gaps, except for the name - Gall.

Has anyone came across these names in their tree, or know if Gall could be a shortened version of Ballingall?
