Hi housie
I have done heaps of research on this family and am happy to share.  I haven't done much for quite a while as I've had major commitments but am still interested and should be able to pick it up again in a few months.  I've sent you a pm. ciao bertoli

John BAINS ( Herald painter) and Elizabeth Webb RAINER are given as parents of  John BAINS on his marriage certificate in Sydney, Australia 1878.

His place of birth is recorded as London and/or England on all documents located (incliuding his children's birth certs).  From these records his year of birth is 1843 or 1844.

This John Bains was a mariner, an able seaman. and  some 1870s records have been found for him sailing near Australia

I have not been able to find any record of  either John Bains  or Elizabeth Webb Rainer in London (or England for that matter) No birth or marriage certs and would love some help and/or suggestions to locate them in London.
Thanks bertoli

Have sent off to SAGHS for the Catherine Briggs cemetery index record.  When I phoned, the very helpful SAGHS volunteer  said that they hold early Parkside records, so have requested records for John Briggs as well.  Will post relevant info when I receive it.
Thanks for your help

The Catherine in the SAGS cemetery index is more likely.  I'll see what they say.
