These are my 4x great grandparents. I have traced Job Turner back several generations but I have had no luck tracing Mary Downes. The marriage states 'married by license' both of the parish of Badby. Does not say if she is a spinster or widow.

I have searched variations on the surname Downes, looked at surrounding parishes, tried to find a Mary marrying someone with the surname Downes a few years earlier. No Luck - I am stumped!

Please can anyone help or suggest where I look next?
Thanks

Thank you both, that's very helpful.

Charles youngest son born 1815 was named Skinner - maybe that's why.

Thanks again.

Charles COLE b 2 Sep 1768 Stepney, London d Oct 1820 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea was a Lighterman.

His first son Charles Philip Waite COLE (1796-1859) was apprenticed to his father on 5 Jul 1814.
The document states
"This Indenture Witnesseth That Charles Philip Waite Cole Son of Charles Cole Citizen and Skinner of London doth put himself in Apprentice to his said Father by Trade a Lighterman and living in Chaney Row, Chelsea, Middlesex"

I am confused as Charles COLE was a lighterman, as was his son CPW COLE, so what does 'citizen and skinner of London mean? I thought a skinner was someone trading furs.

Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / Mary FAWLEY died onboard Panmure in 1887 - look up
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am tracing Mary ROSE born 1832 Croydon Surrey, first husband Francis GRIMSLEY, second husband Francis FAWLEY.
As Mary FAWLEY she boarded the Panmure with husband and daughter Emily bound for Australia. Unfortunately she died while at sea (off the coast of Brazil) on 19 June 1887. I have a copy of the passenger list which shows her death.

I was trying to find out if a death cert would have been registered, but the only record I have found is on Find My Past.  It shows a different birth year  :
Fawley Mary b1838   d1887  New South Wales Deaths 1788-1945
Location : Marine, New South Wales, Australia

Would she have been buried at sea?
Do you think 'Marine' records a death at sea? If so, could someone look it up please?
If death registered can I order a copy cert?

Any advice gratefully received
Thanks

thanks for your help  :)

She is not on the 1851 census, so I'll check for a death record.

Thanks rosie99.

Thanks Rosie99.

That baptism definitely shows father as George, so maybe a relative of John?

Do you have any idea why I cannot find the birth regs on GRO - I had thought their records were mostly complete but not being able to trace any of the post 1837 children is a mystery.
Amos baptised 1838 St Nicholas Deptford
Richard baptised 1841 St Paul Deptford (B 1840)
Susanna baptised 1841 St Paul Deptford
James baptised 1845 St Paul Deptford
Charles baptised 1850 St Paul Deptford
Jane baptised 182St Paul Deptford

Have you come across missing GRO records before?

Thanks again
