Thanks to everyone for the useful information. I have looked at the Surry archives, there are some reference numbers which lead to case books, but no deeper access thereafter. I will try and find a contact email or telephone number. Many thanks once again to everyone.

Thank you iolaus. Where do I apply for the records, would it be through National Archives? I have heard there is also the London Metropolitan Archives too, would they be better?

It's the same old story. The generals and politicians sit on their comfortable chairs, in their regal surroundings making decisions that cost lives. War has no winners.

Thank you Jim. So from what you say, I gather it was a case of over optimism and lack of resources. My father was a paratrooper at Arnhem, and he said (on the extremely few times he spoke about it) that it was one complete cock-up from start to finish, and the biggest culprit according to him was Monty.

Thank you Jim. Your description of the battle and map were most interesting and informative. Was it an organisational mess-up like Arnhem, or a series of unfortunate events?

Yes, on all four EW's records: church (baptism and wedding) and GRO (birth and marriage), EJ's occupation was as Ag. Lab.

Thank you Scobie and Jenner. I will make some plans to go to Gordon Dump Cemetery, it's sad that I probably won't make the 100th anniversary of his death, but I will be thinking about him. His medal is about 3" diameter with no ribbon. I would be very interested in what manoeuvres he was involved in on that day.

Thank you Monica.
William was a Royal Marine. I think in those days it was an infantry regiment attached to the Royal Navy, not the commando force of today. I found him in 1871 in Stonehouse Barracks and also in Durham with his mother and sisters, his occupation noted as "Marines". The mother seems to be the same Jane as in the 1851 census that you posted.

Leo.
