Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Settlement docs The Poor Index CUTT
« on: Wednesday 11 August 21 00:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am in Australia. After paying the Herts County Council for a document on their catalogue index, they have just advised that due to their exit from the European Union, they now cannot accept overseas orders. I'm waiting for a refund. I'm very disappointed and am wondering if someone would be able to kindly lookup this Settlement document for me please? I am unsure from the index if it is a settlement examination, settlement certificate or removal order. I'm hoping optimistically for all three!

Description - The Poor Index 74250030094
D/P116/8/2, Thomas Cutt, Oct 23 1749, from Tewin to Ware

kind regards

Richey, Robert linen draper - New linen-drapery ware-house, no. 89, Grafton-Street, (within one door of Exchequer-Street) [Dublin] [1804?] Richey, Robert > linen draper Household linens trade > Ireland > Dublin > 19th century Advertisements > Ireland > Dublin > 1801-1810 Physical description: 1 sheet 18 cm. I would be so grateful.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: London Metropolitan Archives Lookup Please

Thanks so much for finding her in the death regs. No wonder I couldn't find her under STOW!  Any other help on how to find her criminal conviction would be most appreciated as I can't find her on any of the Criminal Registers or in the newspapers committing her crime!

cheers

Michelle

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be heading to the LMA in the near future?  I live in Australia so am unable to do the research myself but am looking for some records from Clerkenwell Prison/Middlesex House of Correction "List of Prisoners Tried" Reference Code: MJ/CP/B for 1855/56.

I am looking for an ancestor Mary Ann STOW who according to the burial registers of the Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney, state she died in the House of Correction on 14 May 1856, aged 51.

Mary Ann Stow was born in 1804 in Greenwich to parents John Stow and Mary Beaver.

I know Mary Ann (dressmaker) was convicted of larceny in Greenwich (stealing linen, cotton, etc) in October 1844 with the sentence of 1 year. This trial appears on the Old Bailey Online records. She then appears in the 1851 Camberwell Surrey Census - lodger, dressmaker at 5 Little Orchard Row with Spong family.

Unfortunately I can't find any further convictions or newspaper articles about her later conviction (found plenty on the 1844 conviction), but she must have been convicted at some stage to have died in the House of Correction in 1856.

Any help would be most appreciated.

cheers

US Lookup Requests / Re: McKeesport, Allegheny, Pennsylvania

Thanks Lisa, yes I have considered that family too, but their ages are all very far out (Joseph b 1836 and Mary b 1837), and birthplaces (Mary was born in 1850 McKeesport, Penn not England) and names too.  I tried to find this family in the 1870 census (in England or Penn), but haven't been able to yet. cheers, Michelle

Thanks Lisa, your help is much appreciated. Yes, I've seen the Henry & Emma Davis siblings on Ancestry, and I've seen the 1880 Philadelphia census too thanks. I've also found a Joseph and William Davis in the Philadelphia School Registers on Ancestry that may be mine. I've seen the other Davis families too, but can't prove that they connect with mine one way another just yet.

To answer your question -
I know the names of Mary Ellen Lutz's parents, as I have three of her siblings death certificates (which all state parents names of Adam Lutz and Margaret Snyder. She appears on the census with them in 1850, 1860 and 1870 so I know I've got her correct family.

I suspect that the Joseph Benjamin Davis who married Mary Ellen Lutz (b 1850 McKeesport) was the son of John Davis b 1821 Aldgate, London. I am descended from the London John Davis's brother (Dr Samson Davis), and I have his diary of his visit from England in 1841 to visit his brother John in New York (York House, Washington Street). I have a close DNA link to a lady in the U.S. who is a descendant of Joseph & Mary Ellen Davis's child Joseph B jnr.  Just can't prove the connection yet.

I just wish I could find the death/burial of Joseph Benjamin Davis and Mary Ellen Lutz. I can't find either of their births, marriage or deaths for some strange reason!

Your help is gratefully received.

Michelle
