England / Merchant Shipping
« on: Sunday 22 July 07 23:49 BST (UK)  »
My 3x gr grandfather was in the British Merchant Service during the mid to late 1800's.  I have obtained his death certificate which tells me he died on a ship in 1887.
Is anyone able to advise me where I may find information regarding Merchant Ships during that time.  I have looked at the obvious sites, but have not had any luck.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Trish

Is anyone researching the Harrison family of Bishopwearmouth or Monkwearmouth, Sunderland?  My grandfather William Ernest Harrison born 1897, John Thomas Harrison born 1872, Ralph Harrison born 1838. Ralph had a brother John born 1836/7. Ralph Harrison born 1805? Would really like to hear from you.

Inverness / MacLeod/Kelly Isle of Skye
« on: Wednesday 22 November 06 00:21 GMT (UK)  »
My great great grandmother Christina Kelly was born on the Isle of Skye in 1839, her parents were Charles Kelly (1816) and Mary MacLeod (1810).  Charles and Mary were married in the Parish of Strath and Christina along with her brother Niel were baptised there.  The family moved to Glasgow were I think three more children were born.  They eventually moved to Jarrow, Tyne & Wear and Christina married my great great grandfather George Carr.
Is this familiar to anyone, I am not able to find anymore about Charles and Mary.
Thanks Trish

England / Re: Census, Mariners at sea
« on: Tuesday 31 October 06 01:14 GMT (UK)  »
To all,

Thank you for your input.  All sound very interesting. I have no idea which ship my gr gr grandfather was aboard on any census, just a bit of a shot in the dark really.  I do know he was in the merchant service between 1860's and 1880's and a master at the time of his death, before 1891 (again, I do not know the exact year of his death).
Anyway thanks you for all of the information.
Regards
Trish

England / Census, Mariners at sea
« on: Tuesday 24 October 06 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me if census returns were completed for merchant mariners who may have been at sea on census night? If there were records taken, where they only for ships in British ports or were they taken for those out of British waters?
Any help is appreciated. Many thanks
Trish

Bill,
Thank you for your assistance.  Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I did not get the chance to check over the weekend.  Much appreciated, I will try your suggestion.
