The obituary in question was 15 Feb 1845 in N/C Journal. I found it on Family Search and then looked in British NEwsp Archive but strangely could not find it in latter by simple search. Had to locate it by searching for the publication date of that newspaper. I think it was p3.

That’s interesting. The obituary which started me thinking about this was in Newcastle Journal and one of that family was listed on census as a pauper! But it does explain why I can find so many of mine in small local newspapers if they didn’t have to pay. Thanks for your help.

Iam always surprised when ancestors living in relative poverty, incl some described in census as paupers, have details of births, marriages and deaths within their family printed in newspapers as far back as 1840s or even earlier?
Did relatives have to pay for these? Or did newspapers have their own ways of obtaining info and print them of their own accord?

What is the origin of the name of Dockwray Square in North Shields? Is it named after someone with surname of Dockwray?

Thanks so much, Alan Boyd, for your skilful detective work in locating Prodlaw! I live a couple of miles away and had never heard of it. So many old names have completely disappeared and been replaced by new ones. What would we researchers do without Rootschat?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have verified that the placename of Proudlaw or Prodlaw is recorded as “in the parish of Bamburgh” in the original entry in 1770s Baptism register. Perhaps it is an old name for a tiny place/building which no longer exists.

I have received a query from someone researching ancestors from North Northumberland who mentions that one of them may have lived at PROUDLAW. Probably near Bamburgh, Warenford or Newham. I live near the latter but have not heard of it and it does not appear on old maps.
Can anyone help suggest where this might be? I think it could be an mis- transcription but for what?
