Bedfordshire / Re: ARMSTRONGS of Ravensden

Hello Bob
Well, I must admit I’m still confused! It doesn’t help when Samuel Busby and family sometimes add Armstrong to their names and other times are just Busby.
Best wishes, Ann

I’ve been re-reading this thread about all the different lines of the Armstrong family in Bedfordshire. Several years ago I found that my late husband was descended from Thomas Armstrong and Phoebe Wisson, which was how I came to look at it in the first place.
Now I have found a possible tenuous link in my own family tree. This is through Edith Armstrong who married Samual Busby. It seems Edith had a son before the marriage, named Samuel Busby Armstrong, who married Ann Page. A daughter Mary Busby Armstrong married John Crowsley, who was my 1st cousin 3x removed.
How very complicated this family history research is!

Sorry Rosie, I didn’t realise that it would be helpful to give the census reference.

Annette, thank you for those details. I did have them, but thought that the age difference meant they were two different Elizabeths. But I suppose she could be wanting to appear younger.

Comberton, thank you, yes I did find Robert after noticing he was a witness at the marriage.

Yes, thank you Rosie, the 1861 census is where I got most of the details.

Somerset / Elizabeth Mitchell born about 1822 Merriott
« on: Monday 20 June 22 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I’ve never been able to find birth details of my 2 x great grandmother Elizabeth Mitchell. She appears in the 1861 census after her marriage in 1848 in Marylebone, London, to my 2 x great grandfather George Elliott (born about 1815 in Ilchester, Somerset). In 1861 her place of birth is given as Merriott, Somerset, birth year 1822. Their marriage certificate gives her father as Alexander Mitchell, farmer.
Any help would be appreciated
Ann

Thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday, it is much appreciated! Shame I typed ‘careers’ when I meant carers, especially as I’m so grateful to them always, but even more so under the present circumstances.

Had a lovely day for my eightieth birthday, despite the lockdown! Daughter and granddaughter had managed to buy some flour at last and had baked small cakes, which they brought, complete with 80 candles (no not enough to start a fire, but an 8 and a 0!) and stood outside my window trying to light the candles. The wind kept blowing them out, but never mind!

My careers brought me flowers, chocolates and a card, my daughter got me a subscription to Who do you think you are magazine. My son bought me two books off my Amazon Kindle wish list and more chocolates, so I’m really blessed!

The Lighter Side / Re: Old fashioned names

My mum was Gladys Ethel, so had both the names mentioned by Carol!  Dad was called Reginald, and his father was Percival, two more names you don't hear nowadays.

I agree with your comments, David, as you say, we can't prove anything before Thomas's marriage to Judith Bettle in Cardington in 1726.  To my mind it is rather unlikely that Thomas is descended from the early documented Conquest family, but we shall probably never know.
In any case, for myself I am pleased to have got back as far as Thomas!  I didn't expect to get back so far when I started my research into my maternal grandmother's family.
