Can't access Stockport records myself, but in Mobberley by 1768 they were not recording parents names. In fact, that did not seem to start until registartion in 1837. However, different parishes did things their own way.

Good luck.

Went to Wilmslow library and found the birth of Mary Torkenton in Mobberley parish records - christened 10/10/1756 - parents William and Elizabeth..........but also found a Mary Torkington christened 19/10/1736 born to George and Mary of Ashley. I found 2 brothers Josiah and Joseph, christened 19/10/1733 and 03/05/1730 respectively.

Could this in fact be the Mary Torkenton you are looking for? I think you need to investigate her a bit more before you decide that Mary Torkenton was 12 when she got married - although it was legal, I have not come across any examples during this period myself.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Gt Budworth Parish Records - Bailey
« on: Monday 17 November 08 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone search for a marriage sometime around 1824 for me?

My 4xg grandfather was John Bailey, born in Mobberley, baptised 02/11/1800. I find him on the censuses in Mobberley married to Sarah, who was born in Aston, Cheshire. The Aston in Great Budworth seems the most likely (the others in Cheshire are probably too far away). One census says Hepson, Cheshire, but no such place exists and I suspect it is a transpiration error.

I do not know anything more than her first name and that she was born around 1797. I have checked Mobberley parish records, and there is no marriage listed. Their first child that I see from those records was William, born 03/07/1824 - Sarah's surname is not listed in any of the Mobberley parish records and her last child was born prior to registration.

If someone can do this, and identify her name, any chance of finding her birth to identify her parents for me?

If noone can hep, does anyone know if there's an easier way to view these records than travelling to Chester? I live in Wilmslow.

Many thanks

Ed

I know this was dealt with along time ago, but people may still be interested and it I apologize for reawakening this mystery. I am a descendant of Robert Maddock, the brother of Susannah Dodd's father William. Robert resided at the following:

1871 - Brook Cottage
1861 - Brook Cottage
1851 - Brook House
1841 - Marton - no address, obviously

I have visited Marton to see if I could find where this was, as no joy on the google maps - Noone could help me though!

Anyway, the other day I discovered this:

http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/

I typed in the name Maddock for Whitegate and came up with Robert Maddock occupying plot 219 which appears to be his house. When compared with a map from 1875 and 1901, this plot is immediately to the east of plot 725, which is Brookside Farm. When checking who owned plot 725, the occupier is Joseph Macfall. Unfortunately, when you select a view of a modern map, you discover that Brookside Farm no longer exists and Brook Cottage is now a lake! It seems that the buildings of Robert's home disappeared sometime between 1871 and 1875, but Brookside Farm still existed in 1910. It was situated approximately halfway between modern day Foxtwist Green Farm and Gale Green Farm.

It seems to me from below that it was decided that the Susannah Dodds who was Robert Maddock's niece did not die in 1897 at Brookside Farm. Can you confirm that is the case, because it seems you and I are related, and I wonder if you still think this is the case.

Many thanks

Ed

I am related in some way to the Eleanor Breadbury of Mobberley contained in the tree you attached. I am not sure if you are aware, but at the time you are talking about, there were a large number of Hallworth's living in Mobberley too (to whom I am also related). Whilst I agree that the age of Mary Torkenton is very young, it does strike me as more than a coincedence that this girl from Mobberley should move to Stockport and end up marrying someone with a likely connection to a parish which at the time was probably very far away.

Not much help to your quest I'm afraid, but perhaps the Mobberley connection to the Hallworths will add some weight to something down the line.

Anyway, I am currently doing my own research with Mobberley records at Wilmslow library, and will have a look for you. May not reply for a week though.

I am a descendant of the William and Hannah Bailey to which you referred in your posting about 2 years ago. I too am having problems getting any further back with the Baileys/Bayleys of Mobberley. I think they moved from parish to parish and some Baileys seem to come and go from Mobberley. It is difficult to ascertain if they are all connected in some way, or just happen to share a common surname. Are you still trying to research this issue, as I have decided to try and gather all the info together from the Mobberley parish registers to try to connect them?

William married Hannah Halworth on 25/12/1799. I have been trying to find William's ancestors, but to no avail. They lived almost opposite the entrance to Mobberley Hall, now Barclay House Care Home. I agree that they died sometime between 1841 and 1851 - I have not reviewed the burial register for this period yet to see if they were buried at Mobberley.

I wondered if I could find a different place of birth for William from his marriage entry in the parish register - but it simply states he is from Mobberley - I have no way of finding out where he was born.

I would love to find out what Bailey/Bayley info you have.
