« on: Thursday 22 September 22 12:19 BST (UK)  »
The general blurb for this board states “ Remember: Stay at home. Keep social distancing. Wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds.

Surely it is time to move on?

« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 09:36 GMT (UK)  »
The above individual was an actor born in London in March 1832; he died in Brighton in 1906. However is anyone able to confirm details of his parents - full names ( was his father also J L?), mother's maiden name, professions (were they both on the stage?), dates of death, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

New Zealand Completed Requests / De Maus/ Henderson Marriage
« on: Wednesday 05 August 20 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Jane Sinclair McGlashon married a photographer James De Maus in Edinburgh and they subsequently emigrated to New Zealand. After his death she may have married a John Henderson presumably in New Zealand; this would have been in the early 1880s. Question is whether anyone is able to confirm that this marriage did indeed take place and if so when and where.

« on: Wednesday 05 August 20 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone provide information regarding the marriage of Barbara McGlashan (or McGlashon) to William Sly in New Zealand. I am trying to establish whether she is the daughter of Alexander McGlashon in Scotland. Also who is William Sly and where was he from? Any help would be much appreciated.

United States of America / George Rowan, Irish immigrant to New york
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I have found the 1912 naturalization record of the above individual. It states that he travelled to New York on the City of Rome arriving in NY on 22 May 1893, having sailed from Londonderry. As I am unable to locate details of this ship does anyone have access to passenger records to see what information there is on him. I would also be very interested to know whether there was a fellow passenger  named Hannah Luby (or Looby, or Tooby, or similar ; her name varies a lot). She would have been aged about 20 at the time of the voyage and subsequently married George Rowan.

London and Middlesex / Cattle Court Hill Street London 1864
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can any one tell me anything about the above address, which I have been unable to locate; eg is it a wealthy or poor area, what sort of people lived there, etc? My interest is on the basis of a marriage of two people residing in nos 1 and 4. The marriage was solemnized "at the district church of St Paul in the parish of St Marys Newington in the county of Surrey" I believe that this is in the Southwark area of London, but I may be wrong.

Scotland / Mystery Castle - Aberdeenshire?
« on: Monday 29 October 18 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone recognise the castle in the attached photo? It looks Scottish, probably North Eastern. The photo is one half of a stereoview; there is no information on the front or the rear of the card.

Technical Help / 1861 Census Methodology
« on: Thursday 09 August 18 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what methodology was used for collecting census data in 1861? For example was a form issued to each household for completion by the head of the household as today or were individuals employed to knock doors and ask the relevant questions, or what? I am trying to establish the accuracy of employment descriptions in this census as to whether they are likely to be very accurate or just generic. I presume that the same approach would have applied throughout the UK although my particular interest is in Edinburgh.
