East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Burial Records Gifford
« on: Tuesday 04 July 23 15:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters

Please could you help me as I'm having a mental blank !

On behalf of a friend I've been researching his relatives death in Gifford 1906.

I have found lots of information but wanted to complete the task by finding his grave.

I have looked at find a grave and deceased online and not found him.

I've also looked at The British Newspaper Archives death notices with no result.

I think the family wouldn't have been particularly well of so there may not be a headstone.

Would MI's be the next step or can burial records be accessed ?

Thanks

The Common Room / Medical help please, what type of posioning ?
« on: Tuesday 27 June 23 16:38 BST (UK)  »
On behalf of a friend I've been looking at a death certificate for a young lad who died age 13 in 1906 in East Lothian.
Their family story goes that he ate raw turnip straight from the field and was poisoned.

I have found him but can't quite decipher the cause of death. I'm not able to post a clip until I get some help.

The cause of death is something like plomiric/planaris ?? poisoning

Does anyone with greater medical knowledge than I know what it is likely to be ?

I will post a clip later when the techies return home but in the meantime my nose is really bothering me  ;D

Scotland / 1921 Census Scotland
« on: Wednesday 02 November 22 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters

Does anybody have any inside information on when the 1921 Scottish Census will be released ?

It was to be late summer then the latter part of the year.

We’re now in November and I’m champing for a few a few brick walls to crumble an it’s release.

Yours in anticipation!

The Common Room / Searching the 1901 Census
« on: Sunday 23 October 22 17:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters

Please could someone tell me is it possible to look at a specific street on the 1901 census without a surname?

I’ve been looking for a particular family they lived in the same street for 30/40+ years.

I can find them in 1891 and 1911 at the same address.

I have tried to look up other people on the street in 1891 in 1901 but no luck, it’s as if the page has been missed.

What I would like to do is ‘walk’ down the street and see if they are there.

Is it possible to look at this census by street?

Thanks

The Common Room / 1921 Census FindMyPast payment help/advice please
« on: Sunday 23 October 22 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters

I am trying to pay for a 1921 Census record I have found on Find My Past.
Last night and again today I am unable to change the payment details as the previous card logged has expired therefore the transaction is unable to complete.
I sent a message via the 'support' button but have had no reply.

Has anyone else experienced this ?
is there something blindingly obvious that I'm missing ?

Thanks

The Stay Safe Board / Fake NHS Covid 19 alert texts scam
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
Just a heads up to a scam doing the rounds

My brother in law received a text yesterday to say he had been in contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID 19. The text then had a link to ‘order tests’
He is a retired bachelor in his 70s and doesn’t have a very big social life other than with us. He has just recently started going out again therefore hadn’t realised when ordering tests online you didn’t have to pay the postage, hence put in his credit card details and was scammed. Luckily I had just read an article in the local paper about the scam and since we has recently seen him he had called to say he had a text ‘had been in contact ..etc.’  I smelt a rat.

He had cancelled his card !

He is an intelligent man who ran his own business for years. Weirdly he had a headache last night and as feeling a bit off hence believed the text and made a bad judgement.

The Common Room / External door curtains - Idle curiosity
« on: Sunday 21 November 21 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
I recently had the delight of being allowed to copy some photos of my house from the 1940s approx.
One is of two ladies standing on the front door steps in summer.

I noticed there was a white curtain pulled back on the outside of the door.
I just assumed it was probably something to do with the war blackout but when I was showing the photo to my mum she said houses used to have canvas door curtains in summer to protect the paint.

It’s logical for our front door as since it is south facing it gets very hot, in fact the door expands and contracts a lot with the weather. I expect there wasn’t the technology then for paint which could endure such movement.

I tried to look these curtains up but sifting through all the ‘shopping’ stuff was tedious.

I was just wondering if anyone remembers these ?
Presumably they were not a permanent feature and were just put up in summer?

Just my idle wondering  :)

Staffordshire / Hillfield Home, Hillfield Lane, Stretton
« on: Monday 06 September 21 13:07 BST (UK)  »
I have just received the death certificate for my Great Uncle who died age 71 in Hillfield Home, Stretton in 1969.
A quick internet search seems to indicate it was a care home but is no longer.
Please could anyone give me info about it.

Was it a council home ? Did it specialise in any particular type of care ?

He apparently didn’t have good health as he was gassed during the war.

The informant a Doris Cadman was listed as ‘occupier’ ? Does this mean manager ?

My mother has no recollection of his death which she would have remembered as he died just before Christmas and was buried on Christmas Eve.
I think he may have estranged himself from his family, he was buried in a communal grave.

Just trying to fill in some detail
Thanks

The Common Room / GRO help please
« on: Friday 06 August 21 13:56 BST (UK)  »
I think this is a simple question which I need help with please.

I seem to think I have read on RootsChat that people have ordered a digital copy of a certificate which was cheaper and quicker to obtain. Is this correct ?

I have just ordered a death certificate and there didn't seem to be an option for a digital copy.

Most of my research has been on Scotlandspeople.

Thanks
