Hertfordshire / Watford Railway disaster
« on: Tuesday 15 June 21 21:49 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has ancestors connected to this sad disaster. I found the link on my local Watford history site. Sometimes the Watford central library and Watford museum share some very interesting pieces of history and photographs. http://www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/accidentaldeath/watford.html?fbclid=IwAR0rm1SRwqmFuEwETgYYZkRnn3Hf1PPQPpDKDBDJ8p8qjamzBzg4ToeYynk

Cornwall / Ambrosone
« on: Friday 18 September 15 19:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi Cornwall rootschatters. I am usually on the Hertfordshire site. Having got stuck with my Goodman ancestors, I decided to try Ambrosone. Does anyone please have information about Ambrosone and descendants in Cornwall. Also, whether there was any connection with the Uren surname.
I had some information already from Italy, my husband's ancestors. Going back as far as 1833 on the direct paternal side. They appeard to originate from Montesarchio, Benevento, Italy.
I did a DNA swab test on my son, just out of interest, expecting to find Italian matches or perhaps none at all. I requested for a 37 male YDNA marker test.
I was very successful, previously, with this male marker test on my Goodman ancestors. Direct descendant, five generations in common, with another male Goodman who had agreed to be swabbed. Later still, finding documented evidence to also support the results.

Recently, I was surprised to find that my son matched 25 out of 37 with Frank Uren, Cornwall.
In the 1861 census St Mawes, St Just, Truro, Cornwall- Elizabeth Collins, head, was a Lodging House Keeper and although she had some children with the surname Collins, she also had two Ambrosone children. She was listed as being a widow. Her daughter Elizabeth Ambrosone was born in 1849 in Cornwall and her son born in 1853. Her mother's name was Lawer and she was also a widow. I hope that I have interpreted that correctly.
Although probably unrelated, there was a Thomas Uren who married a Sally Collins 24th August 1805 Kenwyn, Cornwall. I was unable to find any Uren and Ambrosone match.

Having not expected there to be any Ambrosone families in England, especially before 1830. I decided to look outside of Cornwall. I found Francis Ambrosone who actually married in 1830, Somerset, by banns, although it doesn't state ages and where Francis or his wife Keziah Knapton were born.
In 1817, a John Francis Ambrosone was living and married in Portsea Hampshire to Lucy May. Annoyingly, this information also failed to mention where the parties were born.

There were Ambrosone families in Brighton, Anna Maria Ambrosone, who married in 1840 to John Maria Gancia, he was born in Italy, although Anna Maria was born in Brighton.
There was a John A Ambrosone, Jeweller, born in Brighton in 1820, living with his brother and sister. Interesting to know who his father was and where his father was born.
Later on, there were Bradford born Ambrosone families. My daughter, in jest, said "it is bad enough having a crap surname, but to discover that it is not even that unusual is another thing".

United States of America / William Goodman UK
« on: Thursday 16 October 14 17:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking at the possibility that William Goodman, baptised 1804 Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire UK, may have gone to America. William was the uncle of my grand father. I have documented evidence of two ancestors who travelled to different countries. NZ and Australia and my grand father's brother George Goodman, born 1881, was believed to have gone to Canada. However, in George's case, evidence of his whereabouts after 1891 was never found.
Please let me know where I could begin my search re the possibility that William may have gone to America. Also if anyone knows of newspaper links that I could explore. With my NZ ancestor his sister had written to some of the NZ newspapers asking for him to get in touch. This proved very valuable in identifying that I had the correct person. Thank you.

Hi, my ancestor was George Goodman born 1844 Rickmansworth Hertfordshire UK. I am on the Hertfordshire UK rootschat forum. My ancestor's uncle was John Goodman, son of Thomas and Zylpah (Sophie) Goodman. He was transported to Tasmania in 1836 on a ship named Eden.John was born in Rickmansworth abt 1811. John's arrival date to the colony VDL was 22/12/1836. He had been tried for larceny 7/April/1836. His offense stated stealing 2 Bushels of Potatoes, Fowl and for poaching. It was stated that he was single and a farm laborer.
John was given his freedom in April 1847. Please could anyone help with trying to find any information on how and where John lived his life, in Tasmania, following his discharge. Thank you.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Wellington Archives Help Please COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 09:41 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone help out by viewing the probate for Thomas Goodman 1908 from Wellington Archives. I live in the UK and unfortunately I am unable to access the records otherwise. I would be very grateful if you can help. Also if there is any way that I could purchase copies should any kind soul be willing to help me out. The newspaper item giving information on the eventual beneficiary of his estate is dated 1913 some five years later. The probate file may cover correspondence for those four or five years. He died in 1907 and the probate was granted the following year, 1908.
Annoyingly I have fairly recently visited Wellington on holls but didn't discover this information until now. I have received such excellent help from my thread Thomas Goodman on NZ rootschat and therefore I got to this stage. Thank you if you can possible help. Information as follows.

Wiltshire / Thomas Goodman abt 1766
« on: Monday 21 April 14 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I am researching Thomas Goodman born abt 1766 Wiltshire. I am also on the Hertfordshire forum as Thomas lived and died in Hertfordshire. He married Zylpah Harding in Rickmansworth Hertfordshire in 1795 and had several children. He later remarried Mary Purseler in Watford although there doesn't appear to have been any children from that union.

Some of his descendants and myself have been trying, for some time, to discover who his parents were. There is no obvious record of his birth in Wilts either. On the Rickmansworth, West Hyde, census, 1851, HO107/1714, 8, 469, his place of birth is down as Rushall or Russell, Wilts. He died later in 1851 and is buried at West Hyde. Previously Rushall and some other places were searched, on my behalf, in Wilts but without any success.

Recently, Maddie from Rootschat Herts forum, noted that the name Russell may have been used in the past, whilst meaning Rushall. It was while reading the account of the hanging of John Goodman at Devizes, Wilts in the 1800s. He refers to Russell and an area quite near to Rushall. It did confirm to us also that there were Goodman people around that particular area. Other than the Rev. G. Goodman who came later.

I have put a request in the Wiltshire newspaper for any male Goodman, descendant from the Wiltshire Goodman people, 1700s-1800s, who may be willing to take a DNA test at no cost to him. However, I have not had any luck with that either. Please pass on my request if you should know of any likely person. Also if you can throw any light on my struggle I would be grateful.

Canada / George Goodman Missing
« on: Monday 21 April 14 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am from Hertfordshire UK and am on the Hertfordshire UK forum. I have discovered Thomas Goodman on Paperpast-Dominion NZ 12th April 1913, Volume 6, Issue 1722. It reads as follows:

"The court also dealt with an application concerning a missing nephew of Thomas Goodman, late of Hillgrove, Otago, labourer, who died on December 2 1907 and of whose estate the public trustee is administrator. The estate became divisible between the deceased's sister, Mrs Eliza Seabrook, of Watford Herts, son of deceased's brother George. All trace of the nephew has been lost since 1899, when he is supposed to have left London for Canada. Advertisements inserted in English and Canadian newspapers have failed to trace the missing man, and the court made an order for payment of the residue of the estate to Mrs Seabrook."

I have posted on the NZ forum for info on Thomas. However, George 'the nephew' is my grandfather's brother who was born in Rickmansworth Hertfordshire UK in 1881. George's father was also named George. George senior died in 1888. George, his son, was in a R/C boys home in Watford in the 1891census. Please help if you can re where I could look for information. I tried looking at Canada passenger lists on family search but was not successful. I may have not been successful because of my method of searching!

I know that my grandfather Hubert went to live in Ireland with his mother, Mary Goodman, (nee McCarthy). I was aware that my grandfather had tried to find his brother at some point by putting an advertisement in a newspaper. His sister was put in a girl's home also in Watford, Herts, although I am aware that she died and is buried in Watford, Hertfordshire, UK. Thank you if you can help at all.

Please could you help with when Thomas came to NZ. A record of Thomas's passage from England to NZ was unable to be found on family search. Does anyone know how I might go about finding another avenue to search re Thomas's entry to NZ ? It was suggested to me that perhaps Thomas came to NZ from another country such as Australia.

My ancestor was George Goodman born 1844 in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, UK, son of James Goodman, Blacksmith. George did have a sister Elizabeth (Eliza) and a brother Thomas. George died 1888 and he did have a son named George who was unable to be found several years later.
I have ordered the death cert for Thomas as above and hopefully it will confirm the connection for me and perhaps provide further information.

Lancashire / Dodgson
« on: Monday 27 August 12 17:00 BST (UK)  »
My great grand father Henry Barnard Dodgson son of Samuel and Hannah was born in Oldham above Town, Oldham 1874. I am wondering if any other roots chat members are also researching this family. I know that there was interest from a British gentleman some time back when he visited Fethard. Following that visit there was a write up about it in the local newsletter.
Henry Barnard was a British soldier and married Johanna Coffey in 1899 Fethard, Co Tipperary Ireland. In the 1901 census of Ireland head of household was Johanna, his wife with his daughter Mary. In 1904 he was a postman, mentioned in the London Gazette Nov 1st. In the Fethard & Killusty Newsletter he is mentioned in the Certificates of Honour 1917 which gives a list of the 140 Fethard soldiers who fought in the first world war. He lived at no. 25 The Green Upper Fethard Town Tipperary where he served as a postman for many years. On the 1911 Irish Census the name Dodgson is written as Dobson. My grand father Michael was born in 1915.
