Armed Forces / Joseph Hardy Pennock
« on: Friday 10 November 17 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've ordered a relative's war records from the MOD - and it contains both his WW1 and WW2 services records.  Amazing stuff to see.

I'm looking to confirm some details about this military career of Joseph Hardy Pennock, and I did start a thread on the WW1 page see link:  However, I've posted this on the general board as these new documents pertain to both World Wars.

I'm particularly eager to clarify what happened regarding his supposed desertion in 1917 ... I'm stuggling to work that out!

Thank you!

The Common Room / Photograph dating and restoration board

Hi all,

Can someone explain please why posts on the photograph dating and restoration board now have to be approved by a moderator? It seems silly and slows everything down.

Thank you.

« on: Tuesday 12 September 17 22:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've been sent this unidentified photograph and wonder if it can be roughly dated please.  Also, are they all or girls or is the small child actually a boy?

Thank you.

World War Two / Harry Wood - WW2
« on: Wednesday 30 August 17 18:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm looking into the service records of my relative Harry Wood.  His WW1 service can be found here.

He also lied about his age (as is apparent from these records here), and served in WW2.  Any interpretation or comments on this documents is much appreciated.

Can I have a look-up for this family in 1911 please?

They are in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire in 1891 and in South Sheilds in 1901 (see below).  They die in Sheffield in 1929 and 1930.

Can't find them at all in 1911 and looking for help.

Thank you

Down / John Gordon or McGunigall or McGurnen?!
« on: Wednesday 16 August 17 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Not sure which board to post this on.  My family from this branch are called Gordon.  It seems as though my relative John Gordon was killed in a boiler explosion at the Dundyvan Ironworks near Coatbridge, near Glasgow, Scotland.  He was living at 76 Buchannan Street, Coatbridge.  His wife was Mary Burns, both Irish by birth.

However, for the first time, I discover that instead of his name being John Gordon, the newspapers record him as being John Gordon otherwise McGunigall.  He is described as being either 53 or 55.

However, his death certificate records his name as GORDON, aged 72 the son William Gordon and Bridget McKean.

I've heard from another source that the name might be McGurnen from another, annoyingly, unsoursed document.

Anyway of helping me work this out would be most appreciated.
