Stirlingshire / New Camelon War Memorial

The new Camelon War Memorial, commemorating those who died/were killed in WW1 & WW2 will be unveiled on Saturday 23rd April 2016 at Lock 16, Camelon.

Stirlingshire / Falkirk District Cemeteries (Genealogy)

I thought I had read a post on the forum regarding Falkirk Cemeteries Office intimating their intention to start charging £26.00 per search for 'look-ups' within Falkirk District cemeteries? (If this has been posted already, then my apologies for not finding it.)

Personally, I think it's an absolute DISGRACE and I'm embarrased for them (not that they are!!).

Just trying to get the word around .......

SCOTTISH MILITARY RESEARCH GROUP OPEN DAY

Saturday 22nd November, 1.00PM - 4.00PM in the Blythswood Room

(5th Floor, beside the Archives/Special Collections/Family History Section)

“The Mitchell Library and the Scottish Military Research Group have joined
up to offer this drop-in event. Was your ancestor in the armed forces in
WW1? Do you want to know how to find out more about your ancestors
military history through photographs or other memorabilia?”

There’s free parking around the Mitchell on Saturdays, so it needn’t cost the usual arm and a leg to park your car.

Hi all,

Thanks to the amazing kindness of 'rutti tutti', I now know the burial place of some of my ancestors.

There are 2 graves in West Street Cemetery, Durban (I have the exact locations) which I would love photos of.

If anyone fancies a bit of graveyard wandering, please PM me for Sections, Grave Numbers etc.

New Zealand Completed Requests / William Paul, Scotland to New Zealand

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some pointers please.

Whilst helping a friend with some family research, I came across a Death Notice in the Glasgow Herald Newspaper (of January 25th 1909) as follows:

"Paul. At Palmerston, Otago, New Zealand, on the 16th December 1908, William Paul (late of Drumbeg, Killearn, Stirlingshire), in his 80th year."

I then found an 'In Memoriam' notice in the Otago Daily Times, Issue 17809, 16th December 1919:

"Paul. In fond and loving memory of William Paul, who died at Palmerston South, December 16th 1908. Inserted by his loving grand-daughter, Jean E. Cook."

On the BMD Online site, I found his death (my friend is about to purchase the certificate).

We would like to find out more about William's life in NZ if possible and also about his descendants but haven't a clue how to go about searching NZ records, so any suggestions gratefully received.

Additionally, are there any online burial/cemetery records for the immediate area we could search?

Dumfriesshire / St. Michael's Old Churchyard

Anyone up for searching for a gravestone in St. Michael's and maybe taking a wee photo or two?

I found information contained in an online book on a family I'm interested in saying that they have a gravestone in St. Michael's.

The area is described as the second interior section:

"... proceeding eastward, we reach the narrow cabins occupied by numerous masons and carpenters, who, when alive, helped to build that part of Dumfries which rose up between the time of the Jacobite occupation and the first twenty years of the current century. In the records of that period such names as Frew, Tweddle or Waddell, Harley, Mein, Aitken, Watson, Samson and Crombie frequently occur in connection with building operations ........."

The stone I am looking for is described as a table stone bearing the names of the following:

Robert Biggar, Mason died 14th January 1798 aged 48
Wife Isabella McWhir
Daughter Mary Muller died died 1832 (Cholera epidemic)
Son-in-law John Christopher Muller, Professor of Music, died 1832 (Cholera epidemic)

Aberdeenshire / Andrew(s) Family

I'm looking for James Andrew, born c1829, son of James and Ann Andrew (nee Cadger).

James died 4th November age 45 at West Calder and as this is the only document I can find so far, I've been basing my search on the parents being correct, but am aware that the informant may have been wrong.

I've found him in 1861 living in Bo'ness, West Lothian age 32, a Furnace Manager married to Jane (Hart) with their 5 children. His birthplace is transcribed as 'Maines', Aberdeenshire.

I can't find a birth on either IGI or SP of a James Andrew with parents James and Ann, neither can I find him either living with/not with his parents in either 1841 or 1851.

I believe his mum, Ann Cadger may have been the daughter of James Cadger & Margaret Walker (listed on IGI as being born/christened in Old Deer 30th January 1806)

I've tried Ancestry transcriptions, freecen and everything else I can think of, but haven't been able to come up with anything definitive.

Any suggestions anyone?
