Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with a few words on marriage record

Can anyone decipher a few words on here. I have been staring at it on and off for a while and have a few ideas but would welcome others which are more likely to be correct ;D

The words I am having trouble with are the first four. Then it says

'Alexander Wardlaw and Elspit Huston and gave up their names to be proclaimed and married'

Then the words after that I am unsure about also, apart from the name William.

It's Scotland if that helps.

Can anyone find info on this ship? I have found several Columbia's but not this one and it is transcribed as Columbian on the list of Boer War troopships.

Nothing to do with my ancestry apart from this entry is on the same page as one I am interested in. However if anyone could work out the names and maybe we can find out who some of them were.

I see John, Lord (of where).

Then Dame Margaret Campbell and daughter also Margaret.

Witnesses, John, Earl of (where). George Campbell (son?) to the said Earl.

Cap. Bruce Laird of (where)

James Dalrymple ? Laird of (where)

Could the last name be Robert Dagleish? of (where)


It's Edinburgh 1657 by the way.

What I have so far is James Wardlaw, Cloathiar (clothier I'm thinking).

Next two are his wife's name, Bessie Stirk.

Then a.d.n. which I know from other parts of the page is abbreviation for ' a daughter named'

Then is the name 'Tunnoetae'  :o ???  What kind of name is that!!!

Then witnesses Robert Stainford ? and George Trotter ( I'm happy with Trotter, they pop in and out of my line. I even have an ancestor with it as a first name) .What are the next two words, their joint profession, but what? I thought the first word was 'boy'.

 Then Daniel ( can't make out the surname) he also seems to be a clothier. Then Michael (can't make out the surname). He seems to have the same profession as Robert and George.


Any thoughts anyone, especially on that name. IGI transcribes it as Tunnoetae.

Not too sure of the date on this so Jim or China, your thoughts please. Or anyone else who might pin a date on it of course.

Is that name Mrs. Midgeley?

I have looked at Little Falls and it's not a big place now so Mrs M might be traceable. I am assuming this could be her husband and daughter.

I'm a bit undecided on this one, 1880's or 1890's, probably the former but all suggestions gratefully received.

Also can anyone discover his address. I know the photographer was born 1850, married 1891 and was in business till the early 1900's. His business was on Molesworth Street, Wadebridge. Though now pedestrianised, much of this street still exists and if I can find the address I can take a look where it was next time I am over there.

That's a fair old bustle. She's well upholstered too ;D. A little bargain buy from yesterday 50p.

Jim, China, late 1880's would you say, or is it creeping in to 1890's ???
