England / Female Christian name.
« on: Monday 26 June 23 18:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a female ancestor born in 1784 with a Christian name written in parish registers variously as: Savill, Scivel, Seevil, Seville and Seivilla. Does anyone know of a female name from this period that fits any of these as I'm puzzled?
Thank you.

Other Countries / Death in Africa
« on: Wednesday 12 January 22 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
A relative of mine, John Tait Macpherson, died in Africa probably in the 1920s. He was the local agent for the Blue Funnel Shipping Line in Warri, Nigeria.
Following his death, his belongings were shipped to his family in Liverpool but his body stayed in Warri.
I would like to know if he has a marked grave in Warri, and would appreciate any advice on how I should go about finding out.
Unfortunately, another John Macpherson was Governor of Nigeria and Google seems to concentrate on him.
Thank you,  Al

World War Two / W G Felgate. Royal Marines.
« on: Saturday 01 January 22 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently received the WW2 service record of my father-in-law William George Felgate for his period of service from Sept 1942 until his demob in June 1946.
He was in the Royal Marines, service number X114928. Unfortunately it gives very little detail of what he did and where, just a list of shore bases where he trained in landing craft operation. His medal card, however, says that he was in 504 Flotilla and I have since found that they took the 5th US ranger battalion to Omaha beach on D-Day. Is it likely that he went ashore or just put the boat in reverse and went back to fetch more? It also mentions that he was in 904 LCS(M) from August 1944 to September 1945. Also during this period he was said to be at either COPRA or 905 Flotilla. We know that he went to Burma, or that area, as he qualified for the Burma Star medal but there is no mention of this and I’m not sure where to look.
I would appreciate help from anyone more versed in these matters than I.

Scotland / Bankruptcy of J McPherson & Son
« on: Wednesday 05 June 19 12:16 BST (UK)  »
In December 1872, James McPherson and his son John McPherson, partners in the shipbuilding company James McPherson and Son, of Perth, had their estates sequestered. This was reported in the Edinburgh Gazette of the time.
The trustee appointed was Alexander Tosh, an Accountant of Dundee, and an examination of these two was to have taken place in the Sheriff Court House, Perth, on 21st December 1872. The creditors were then invited to meet in the Solicitor’s Library, County Buildings, Perth, on 30th December 1872, presumably to discuss the outcome of the earlier meeting.
My question is, is it likely that any records still exist of either of these meetings and where could they be accessed as I would very much like to learn the details of this bankruptcy?

Perthshire / What become of wife , Anne Fenton married at Perth on 20/11/1867.
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
John Macpherson married Anne Fenton at Perth on 20/11/1867, and they had two children: Fenton and Georgina.
In 1874, John and his father James, who were partners in the shipbuilding company James McPherson and Son, were declared bankrupt.
John and James then de-camped from Perth to Liverpool taking the two children with them but not, as far as I can establish, John's wife Anne.
John, in 1878, bigamously married Agnes Carbis in Liverpool under the assumed name of John Laing, set up home and raised another family with her. He later reverted to the name John Laing Macpherson.
My query is; what became of Anne? She must have still been alive otherwise no need for the false name.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Australia / The death of Peter Tait
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 15:54 BST (UK)  »
I would value help from anyone who has access to Australian death records.
One Peter Tait is said to have died in Melbourne (assumed the Australian one) in 1875. It would be very helpful to my family research if this could be confirmed or otherwise, together with any other details of him that may crop up.
Thank you,
Al

Scotland / Company law in 19th century Scotland.
« on: Friday 13 January 17 22:22 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please tell me something of Scottish company law in the 19th century and how it was organised.
Was there a registration body to regulate companies at that time? For example, if a person set up in business as a sole proprietor, or a pair set up a partnership, would it need to be registered with a government department or a trade guild?
I am particularly interested in the period 1820 - 1870, and to know what records survive.

England / The mysterious Mrs H Willson.
« on: Wednesday 23 November 16 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Mrs H Willson (with two ells?) and her connection with my family has puzzled me for many years.
She was present at my Grandmother’s funeral in Liverpool in 1936 and was near the top of the list of mourners, which suggests that she was a relative or a close friend. I have been told that she was married to a man who worked in the War Office, presumably Mr H Willson. They are said to have lived in Westminster Bridge Road, London; number 49 I think. When my Uncle from Liverpool was camping with the Scouts, somewhere in the south east probably in the 1920s, she came to their camp and distributed sweets.
She obviously has some connection with our family and may be related through the Macphersons, Balfes or Carbises.
I would be very grateful for suggestions as to how I should tackle identifying her with the scant detail that I have or, possibly, someone may know of her.

Berkshire / Christening in St George's Chapel, Windsor
« on: Saturday 07 November 15 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
My wife's relative, William George Felgate, claimed to have been Christened in St George's Chapel, Windsor. He was born abt 1922 when his Father was serving with the LIfe Guards at Windsor.
Is there any way in which I can verify this?
