« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 13:59 GMT (UK) »
Joseph Howlett b abt 1804 was convicted in London July 1824 of stealing a silk handkerchjef worth 3 shillings. He was deported for life to Van Diemens Land aboard the Sir Charles Forbes along with 130 convicts. They left Portsmouth in January 1825 & arrived Hobart in April 1825.
Seems a harsh sentence for such a seemingly minor crime & I wonder whether he managed to return to England at some point as there is a death in London in 1878 which could be him.
Any information would be much appreciated as I don't have a sub. to any worldwide records.
