Australia / Joseph Howlett Deported to Hobart 1824
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 13:59 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Howlett b abt 1804 was convicted in London July 1824 of stealing a silk handkerchjef worth 3 shillings. He was deported for life to Van Diemens Land aboard the Sir Charles Forbes along with 130 convicts. They left Portsmouth in January 1825 & arrived Hobart in April 1825.
Seems a harsh sentence for such a seemingly minor crime & I wonder whether he managed to return to England at some point as there is a death in London in 1878 which could be him.
Any information would be much appreciated as I don't have a sub. to any worldwide records.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Imbecile in 1871
« on: Saturday 26 November 16 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
Have just come across a woman who married in 1866 & is recorded on the 1871 census as an imbecile. Seems a bit harsh as my guess would be that she had lost a baby & was suffering from post natal depression.
The Victorians were a bit unkind about psychiatric problems weren't they.
The poor woman died in 1873, childless & her widower married her brother's widow.
Nothing like keeping it in the family is there.
Would it have been normal to label the poor woman as an imbecile.
I always understood that an imbecile was disabled from birth, but if that had been so in this case, her husband would hardly have married her.........unless it was a case like in Jane Eyre.

The Common Room / Deportation of German nationals WW1
« on: Friday 11 November 16 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
My 1st cousin once removed married a man who was born in Berlin in 1868 & appears to have retained his German nationality  a least until 1911.
I have found what looks like his death in Berlin in 1915.
Would he have been likely to be deported?
Interestingly on the 1901 census, he was working as a waiter & there were a number of other young German men lodging in the household, although they weren't shown in 1911.
Any thoughts please?

I have details of his army career, marriage, children etc, but canīt find out who his parents were.
The only clue I have......grasping at straws here...... is that another John Sanders Davis was born 5 Sept 1812 & bapt at St Phillip Birmingham 7 Sept 1812 to William Davis & Margaret.

Technical Help / What is Windows playing at?
« on: Wednesday 22 June 16 15:26 BST (UK)  »
I have been using Outlook for my e mail account for more years than I care to remember without too much problem.
The "look" was changed a couple of weeks ago,but I still managed to send & recieve mail.
This morning, when I looked, everything in my in box had been deleted except for a few mails from early May & including one which arrived yesterday which I had intended replying to today.
I have managed to retrieve most of them from the deleted folder. but am at a loss to understand how/why it happened.
I am using Firefox & Windows 7. I havenīt upgraded because I am hoping to replace the laptop within the next couple of weeks.
Is this a ploy to force me to upgrade, something I have done or just a glitch?
Luckily I donīt think I have lost anything important, but I have a few sent mails which havenīt been responded to so I donīt know whether they have actually been sent or whether the replies havenīt been recieved in my inbox.
Several times. when working on my mail. I get a message saying that "Windows cannot connect you to Outlook at the moment" even when my Internet connection is fine.
Can anyone help please?

Technical Help / D disc full Help!!
« on: Tuesday 01 March 16 14:03 GMT (UK)  »
My somewhat antique laptop keeps telling me that the "D" disc is full.
Being a complete idiot where technology is concerned, I canīt see what I can do about it.
It seems to be mainly filled with Windows updates from 2012 to date but thereīs no way of deleting any of them as it keeps asking me to insert a disc. I donīt have any discs.
It also suggests emptying the recycle bin, but thatīs already empty.
If I just ignore the message, will the laptop stop working?
Iīve tried Googling for a solution, without success (or at least, anything I can understand).

Technical Help / Ask.com has taken over my PC
« on: Thursday 05 February 15 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
Canīt get rid of the dratted thing & itīs blocking everything.
I have always  had Mozilla Firefox. When I boot up the PC, I click on Firefox which immediately opens the MSN homepage. I can then open tabs as I need them or Google.
Following some searches I was doing on Tuesday, Ask has taken over & now I canīt access anything via Firefox/MSN.
Donīt know how it got installed, but Icanīt uninstall it.
Did a system restore on Wednesday & all was well, but booted up this morning & lo & behold.......Back to bl***y Ask again.
As you probably realise, techno savvy I am not.
All I want is to be able to get back to being able to open up via Firefox/MSN & have back the tabs from which I access the sites I want.
What do I do???
