I wonder if anyone can help with this placename. This is from Familysearch, I don't have subscriptions to A-y or FindMyPast. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9T3-84K

Samuel Mcminn states on the 1901 Census that he was born at ' Inland Copervan Ireland Ct Down Ref' There could a fault with transcription, or likely the enumerator couldn't quite understand Samuel's accent. But I can't find anything like it.

Anyone got any ideas please?

Could I ask someone to help me with which public house John Henry Elliott was publican of please? John was born 1n 1869 at Stoke Dameral port, Devonshire and was married to Amelia with a son William John. The pub was at Southampton Western (details, familysearch)
Now the year is 1911 and I know we're not allowed to quote look-ups, so I'm being cheeky, but if it might it be one of these 5?

The Common Room / A puzzle on Ancestry/Fold3

Taking advantage of free Ancestry records this weekend, I put in Edward Kates born Berkshire c1800 on Search all records. Up came an entry in Household Cavalry Records : Edward Kates born Windsor 1799. There's a link to the original image on Fold3. This looked good, but at the side are transcribed details from somewhere and the family details didn't match my man. In fact, they look downright odd!
Underneath the image is a slide show of other soldiers names so I clicked on one. And all the family details are the same as Edward...and the next...and so on!
Why would all these different men be given the same family details? Has anyone come across this before?

Armed Forces / Old binoculars

My friend has this pair of binoculars, about which he knows nothing. They must have been in his Dad's things when they cleared the house; his Dad was in WW2 but I believe had a clerical job (in the War Office?). They look very similar to this pair:-

except that the middle section is brass. They are 7.5 inches tall. There are letters and numbers stamped into the black metal:

On the opposite side, there are 3 tiny dots stamped into the left hand part, with 1 dot on the right part.

We thought they looked military, and wondered if any of you might recognise them, the age, where they were made (There's no more writing on them).

Found on the WW1 Service medals and Award Rolls, on Anc-- piece No. 0289 RGA, under 'rank'. I'm thinking it means Sergeant. Battery. Can someone confirm please, because I never heard of my Grandad being a Sergeant?

Just listening to BBC West Midlands News. Sandwell Council are appealing for relatives to come forward to claim the ashes, and attend the funeral, of WW2 veteran, George William Ambrose Mills. George was the first man on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings, being commemorated this year.
Can we help, Rootschatters are brilliant at this kind of job?
I've just written what they know about him:

George was born in Wales and married Gladys. The lived in Tipton and she died in 1982. George lately lived at a nursing home, where he enjoyed dancing, even though confined to a wheelchair. That's it for now.

The Common Room / Birth Cert puzzle

My friend has a copy of his mother's Birth Certificate, dated 6th February, 1918. His mother was registered on 1st July, 1909. Everything is normal, except for the notes written across the bottom:
"Issued at reduced Fee, to be used only for production to the Military Authorities, re Claim for Separate Allowance"

We are puzzled why this was issued. what would this 'separate allowance' be? My friend has never heard of his grandfather being in the War and assumed that because he was a Printer he was in a reserved occupation. I know many servicemens' records are lost, and I haven't found anything that indicates he served. Any ideas?

Technical Help / New battery

I'm sure these are thicko questions, but where is the battery on my laptop, how do i replace it? My existing one won't hold a charge and a message appears telling me to get a new one. Help!
