Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Hopgoods of Hampshire
« on: Thursday 18 August 22 03:38 BST (UK)  »
I'd appreciate it if anyone could help me with this family.  My 4 x great grandmother is Sarah Hopgood. Baptised Andover 1761 to Thomas Hopgood and wife Ann.  I have found a lot of info on Sarah, married (1) Thomas Stroud and (2) Thomas Hutchins. (The 1841 census of her living with children Thomas and Sarah is the worst I've ever seen!!!)  Died 1852 Overton Hampshire.

What I'm searching for is her parents, specifically her mother.  Many Trees say her mother's name is Ann Bennett but I'm not convinced.  Are there any marriages for a Thomas Hopgood to someone called Ann, please? (Son Thomas bapt 1794 and daughter Sarah bapt 1796 both in Andover so possibly the marriage was in Andover in the 1790s)

Kirkcudbrightshire / McKnoe/Mcnoe family of New Abbey
« on: Sunday 03 May 20 10:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out anything about this family prior to 1830 when they migrated to Australia.  JOSEPH WILLIAM McKNOE (baptised 1798 at New Abbey to parents William Mcnoe and Janet Maxwell) He went to West Australia in 1830 with his wife Elizabeth and two children (William b 1825 and Jessie b 1828) apparently one of four labourers sponsored by Thomas Peel. I know it's before official registrations started but I'm hoping to unearth a marriage between Joseph William McKnoe and Elizabeth.
On a document entitled "Friends of Battye Library", Elizabeth's name is given as (?Howe). Many family trees have her as being born about 1808 in Carlisle Cumberland (parents Joseph Howe and Jane Irving).
However it has occurred to me that (?Howe) just might be a misinterpretation of McKnoe or McKnow. A marriage record would prove what Elizabeth's surname was - if one can be found!

Angus (Forfarshire) / Parents of Thomas STEEL
« on: Friday 13 March 20 01:43 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone could help, I'd very much appreciate it as I'm stumped!
Thomas Steel (1795-1845) was born in Montrose and died at sea somewhere near Yarmouth.  His parents were James Steel and Ann Bate (Bait?). They married in Montrose 12 Nov 1780 and that's all I know of the parents.
His siblings were James (1781 -   ), William Mudie Steel (1783 -   ) and Ann (1795 -   ).  All born in Montrose except James junior (not sure where he was born, presumably Montrose as well).
The family were quite a nautical family, apparently.
Thomas married Margaret Scott Gordon in Montrose in 1822 and one of their daughters migrated to Australia, which is where I live.
Thank you
Ann

Berkshire / Henry Dennis - Bray Berkshire
« on: Saturday 08 June 19 01:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Henry DENNIS said to have been born in Bray Berkshire in 1830 or 1832.  Many gaol records of him (starting in 1848 when he said he was 16 yo) before he was transported to Australia in 1856 on the ship William Hammond. Any help tracing his birth records or parents names would be much appreciated.

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Thomas Ayres (Ayers) and Matilda Smart
« on: Saturday 14 May 16 10:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters

I have been researching the above couple for my daughter-in-law and would be interesting to find out anyone else looking into this family.  I can only find them in the 1841 census (in Lincolnshire) and the 1851 census (in Cambridgeshire).

Of particular interest to me is whether or not the family migrated to Australia.  I'm assuming that it is their daughter (Mary Ann Ayers/Ayres born 1836 in Peterborough) who migrated to Australia.  In 1853 she married a convict William Rolfe.  They had 6 children before she left him to live with a George Ladhams.  She and George married once William died.

Mary Ann's death certificate gives her parents names and her place of birth but I cannot find when she migrated to Australia.  Did she came out here by herself or did the whole family come to Australia?  This is what we would like to know.  The family seems to disappear after the 1851 census.  Is anyone else researching this family?  Any help appreciated.

Regards and thanks

Somerset / Iron Foundry
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 02:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Guys
One of my ancestors was an iron foundry worker living in Lyncombe and Widcombe Parish in the 1851 census.  Looks like he was living in Paradise Row - I bet that was a misnomer!!  I've tried to find information about iron foundry(ries) in the area but with very limited success.  Don't suppose anyone knows about this subject?  Would love to know whereabouts such an iron foundry would be, its name and a possible photo/drawing of it.
Happy New Year to all

Sussex / Burnt House, Cuckfield, Sussex
« on: Sunday 05 January 14 10:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
I have a letter written in 1927 and sent to my grandfather, who was living in Victoria, Australia at the time.  The letter, written by Lady Kennedy, is embossed with the address "Burnthouse, Cuckfield, Sussex".  I am curious about this house and have tried - unsuccessfully - to find a picture of it.  Does anyone know where or what it is and hopefully let me know where I can find a photograph of the house?
Thanks for any help

Derbyshire / Stone Bench, Fairfield
« on: Friday 25 October 13 02:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Have just received a birth cert for ancestor (Wildred Hodder) born in 1895 at "Stone Bench, Fairfield".  Can anyone help with information about this place?  Some Google searches refer to "High Peaks" but not sure what that means in relation to Stone Bench.  Was it a farm or a suburb or ...? :-\
As I live in Australia, any information about this place would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ann

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Turner family, Arksey
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 03:22 BST (UK)  »
Please help. I'm researching Annie Jane Turner who married John Thomas Dean at Arksey on 1 January 1923. (Yes, the JT Dean who ran the Plough Inn!) I have a copy of their marriage certificate.  She says her father was Samuel Turner, deceased, a miner. I have found a Samuel Turner but I think it's the wrong one as he is a weaver - although of course he could have changed occupations - and have followed this Samuel Turner and his wife's (Ann Jane's) trail through the census records. He had a daughter Annie but she it seems she was already deceased by the 1911 census whereas the Annie I'm searching married in 1923 and went on to have a number of children, one of whom migrated to Australia (which is where I live).  I know I'm creeping into the Privacy Act era, but does anyone know of this family or can anyone straighten me out?  Pretty please!  I'm tearing my hair out on this one!
