Hi

I'm looking at a trainee pilot's medical report and would like to know if anyone can decipher the word by "right ear"?

Could it be perforation? He did have some problems with his right ear further down the track, but would they have passed him as fit to fly if so?

Thanks
Barbara

Hi there

I'm asking for a friend who thinks this photo may be her Grandmother but it seems much older to me (who knows nothing ::) ),so I would appreciate some expert help.

Mary Ann was  born in 1879 and died in 1962,so perhaps more likely a Great Grandmother ?

Many thanks,

Barbara

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Three Edward Farrells
« on: Saturday 31 August 19 00:39 BST (UK)  »
If possible, could I get Edwards 2 and 3 removed from this photo - Thankfully Edward the 1st has a quieter dress sense.

It's not a particularly sharp photo - I do have a higher resolution version if required - but the only one that's not completely in shadow.

Head and shoulders and a clean up would be great .We have been given his rosary beads and thought we might  incorporate them somehow in a photo frame.

Thankyou
Barbara

New Zealand Completed Requests / Coroner's Inquest William Barrett
« on: Wednesday 13 June 18 01:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello

May I ask for a lookup of a Coroner's Inquest for William Barrett, who died on 20/1/1859 in Christchurch  according to the Barbadoes St Cemetery records.

https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23586415

I am hopeful he is my William Barratt ,painter and glazier whose death certificate has eluded myself and others both in the BMD records and fiche for years, having tried all variations of the surname.Last found on a Wellington jury list for 1855.His widow Mary Ann re-married in 1861.

William Barrett, subject of the Inquest was also recorded as painter on a jury list in Christchurch prior to his death.

I haven't been able to find anything on paperspast regarding the inquest.

Thanks
Barbara

New Zealand Completed Requests / Wellington Archives Intention to Marry
« on: Thursday 26 October 17 06:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am reluctant to ask ,because I had a look up three weeks ago and understand if the answer is no.

If I could have a look up of the Intention to Marry of Lewis Hook and Eliza Mexted ,who married on the 27th February 1861.I would be grateful.

Unless someone has any suggestions of where else to look for an elusive birth registration ???.

I have been trying to find his” eldest” daughter’s birth  so that I can get a certificate  and hopefully  establish if he is ,in fact, named as her father. Thus giving me an approximate year of his arrival in NZ.

Sarah Jane Mexted Hook was born in 1858.This is consistent with her age at marriage and death.

When she married George Romeril in 1875 at St John’s Presbyterian, Wellington her name is Sarah Jane Mexted ,as it is on the BMD Index. Witnesses: Lewis and Eliza Hook

I’d get her death cert, but the information will more than likely be what everyone believes to be true, won’t it?

I cannot find her birth in the BMD Indexes or on Family Search –not under Hook or Mexted or variations of both.

There are Sarah Jane’s with mother Eliza  but the surname isn’t right .

I’ve looked at every Mexted  and Hook child born between 1857 and 1859….and every child with no name in the same date range.

There is another large Hook family in NZ but they are not related.

I bought a cert for an un-named child of an Eliza and George Mexted (her father), thinking they might have given her father’s name out of necessity.

But that child was Eliza’s  youngest sister Harriett. Her mother was named  Elizabeth or Eliza as well.

My next step would be to look at the fiche, but these and four CD’s are the sum of our genealogy resources at the moment and are stored at a branch library at the other end of town. They are only available on a Monday from 9.30am to 1pm.which is fairly hopeless.

Thankyou
Barbara

New Zealand Completed Requests / Archives lookup please HOOK
« on: Friday 29 September 17 08:47 BST (UK)  »

A very non – urgent look up, if possible, please.

There are two items in the archives regarding Lewis Hook.

One is an application in 1883 for a position as  coxswain:

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24281133

The other an application in 1892 to move the body  of the late George James elsewhere in the Karori  cemetery.

 https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24742479

How George James is related to him, I have no idea.

Either one will suffice if it is written in his own hand – I just want to compare the signature with that on an 1854 British Navy enlistment form.

Thankyou

Barbara

New Zealand Completed Requests / Ernest Taylor where did he go to school
« on: Wednesday 20 September 17 09:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
Would it be possible to have a lookup for any school records for an Ernest James Taylor who gives his place of birth as Woodville and date of birth 11/3/1885 on his Army Enlistment papers where he enrolled as Ernest James Wilson,an alias.

His Police mugshot also gives his place of birth as Woodville - probably the only truth he told in his adult life!

I have no idea where he went to school. On his Army record he gives his next of kin as his mother, Ellen Wilson of Inglewood ,but this is fiction.

I'm hoping to find the names of either of his parents.

There is another Ernest James Taylor of about the same age whose parents are James and Ellen Taylor, but I know this is not the same person.

Normally I would look at the NZSG CD at the library ,but Hamilton Library has been closed since the earthquake in November and the council are still making up their minds about the cost of making it quake proof. Meanwhile the Heritage collection is not available.

I can't remember what years the records start from - they have also removed the collection from the online catalogue. To quell a riot,I imagine.

Otherwise, would I need to contact Archives for this information?.

Thanks
Barbara

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Living DNA puzzle
« on: Monday 28 August 17 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to mine.

I bought a Living DNA test kit at the beginning of this year and returned my sample on the 2nd March (after a great deal of hassle with NZ Post, who refused to recognise the prepaid envelope supplied, ending with my paying postage myself)

This kit went AWOL so I contacted the help desk in April, who were extremely helpful and also indignant regarding the postage problems. They sent me another kit, and offered me a free book as compensation.

I returned this kit in May, once again having to pay $50 NZ for tracked courier. (A formal complaint to NZ Post has now been made by Living DNA).

I was notified that my kit was received and that testing had started on the 31st May. Expected to be completed by 12th August.

A week or so later, I received another email telling me that testing started on the 23rd June. Expected to be completed  12th September.

I filed the second email, presuming they had just recalculated their dates.

My results came through earlier than expected, on the 25th July and I was very happy with them as they  confirmed nearly all of my paper research giving me a few areas I had been wondering about, to explore.

Scotland and Ireland were contrary to expectations, but reading other reviews online, they are constantly updating their database, so will hope for more definition in the future.

On the 18th August, I got another email advising my test results were available, clicked on the link, and was astonished to discover that the first sample ,which was lost in the post, was in fact ,the kit they were referring to in the 23rd June email !

Upon checking, I found that this set of results was slightly different to the results in the second test, and the regional breakdown of areas in the UK not as detailed.

For example, on the second test (first sample), Great Britain and Ireland are grouped together whereas in the first test (second sample), they are separate sub –regions.

I do realise that  results from other companies will often provide different results, but I would have expected that two  samples from the same person, taken under the same conditions within two months of each other, using the same lab, to be identical.

Am I wrong?

This has undermined my confidence in the accuracy of the first results.

Of course I will contact Living DNA to enquire, but before I do  would be very interested to know if this is common. I will attach images.

Thanks

Barbara
