Down / Ballimiglassy and Ballisvock.

In 1605, the towns of Ballimiglassy and Ballisvock  were purchased by the McDowells of Wigtownshire. The deed places them in Co Down but I have never been able to identify them on a modern map. Any ideas?

Orkney / (*Completed with thanks*)Edward Spence
« on: Thursday 21 November 13 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.
I wonder if I may pose a question to the Orkney group. I am based in Dumfries and currently looking for Edward Spence. This man was killed in the Indian mutiny of 1858 and (had he not been killed) would have been awarded the Victoria Cross. In 1907, the King decreed that Victoria Crosses could be awarded posthumously for the first time and Edward was to be the first recipient. His papers stated that he came from Dumfries and was born there 28th December 1837 although another source suggests 28th December 1830.  (no birth records found)
In 1907, the Army authorities wrote to the provost of Dumfries looking for descendants but none were found.

Now, looking at the 1841 census only three Edward Spences of possible age existed in Scotland. I have eliminated two who were still alive after 1858 but Edward Spence, son of Edward Spence and Barbara Hourston who married in Eday 2nd February 1828, has not been eliminated. Does anyone  have any knowledge of him?

Is anyone researching the Rev Benjamin McDowell? He was the son of Ephraim McDowell. Ben was born in New Jersey in 1739 and died in Dublin in 1824.

Does anyone know John Macintosh Murray? born Liverpool 25th February 1903 and died in Nottingham 19th March 1975.
He is related to another John Macintosh Murray who was born London in 1897 and died in Australia in 1939. We just haven't figured out how. It would be good to make contact with a living relative.

Hi. I have Canadian friends whose ancestors were Adolf and Emma Schabert.  With daughter Emilia they emigrated to Canada in 1927 from Mlodicin, near Radon in Poland. They were Lutheran Protestants. My friends will be visiting Poland in May 2013 and would like to find any contacts from this family or any pointers on where to find information.
