Armed Forces / Possible Royal Marines Death 1888
« on: Monday 28 November 22 19:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have a relative who was a Sgt in the RMA but I know nothing of his service record. His name was William Holland and he was born in 1855 in Dorset. It appears that he died in 1888 at the age of 33 and, given that his daughter's marriage certificate in 1907 gives his occupation as RMA Sgt, I presume that was his position when he died. He is buried in Southsea. I have been unable to trace any casualty records online and was wondering if anyone has any ideas. He may have died of natural causes but seems quite young so a military cause of death is quite possible. I can of course order a death certificate but was just wondering if there's another way to find out more about him. Thanks.

Norfolk / Arthur (also known as Dick) Crook WW2 enquiry
« on: Wednesday 27 May 20 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I've asked similar questions before but I was wondering if anyone has any new ideas for me. I am trying to find out about my late Great Uncle Arthur Crook during WW2. He lived in Rushford near Thetford during the war. He was born in 1896 and signed up to serve in WW1 in 1914/15. However he was discharged after 10 days as medically unfit for service. As far as I know he worked on the land and may have been a game-keeper or may have worked on a farm. His address was The Old Poultry Farm Rushford (his parent's address) but I don't know if they actually had any poultry. He would have been 43 when the war broke out so would have been too old for active service and may still have been medically unfit anyway. I am trying to find out if he was in the Home Guard or a branch of Civil Defence or even the Auxiliaries. I can't imagine he didn't volunteer for something as he had already done so 20+ years before. I know he had a great knowledge of the land and his area from chats he had with his nephew a few years later. He was sometimes know as Dick to his family, although I've no idea how that came about.

Does anyone have any ideas please as to how I might find out more about him.

Many thanks everyone

Armed Forces / RAF National Service 1947 to 1949
« on: Friday 13 March 20 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My father undertook his National Service in the RAF between 1947 and 1949. He was at West Kirby, Credenhill, Padgate and Innsworth where he worked in the Pay Office for nearly all his service life. I am mainly after photographs of these bases but would also be interested if anyone served at any of these sites during the late 1940s.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Armed Forces / Norfolk regiment 1919 afghan war
« on: Thursday 23 January 20 21:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. This might have already been asked but I am trying to find out about the 2nd Norfolk battalion in Waziristan between 1919 and 1922. My grandfather served there but I can't find out much about the battalion whilst they were there. Does anyone have any suggestions re where I can go for information, or if there any books that might help.

World War Two / Canadians in Hampshire WW2?
« on: Monday 03 June 19 00:11 BST (UK)  »
Just to help me with a bit of family research please does anyone know if Canadian troops were stationed in Rowlands Castle during 1942, 1943 or 1944. My mother recalls seeing some there, she thinks before DDay but I'm wondering if it was in readiness for the doomed Dieppe landings in 1942.

Many thanks

Europe / French Revolution surnames
« on: Saturday 12 January 19 00:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. Just trying to see if the names Le Gros Bisson and/or De Deauville mean anything to anyone re the French Revolution. I've been told that a family member may be related to a French aristocrat who escaped France at that time and then ended up in France.

Any help would be great

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Fairey Aviation, Hayes WW2
« on: Thursday 09 August 18 12:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Trying to put together a  bit of detail re a relative of my wife's. I believe he worked for Fairey in the early part of WW2 before going to Vickers shortly before they were bombed at Brooklands in September 1940. I have been told that the Hayes factory was also attacked but I can't find out anything about it. Does any know anything further about this.

Thanks

Paul

Hi

My grandfather was in the 2nd Norfolks between 1919 - 1921 and was in receipt of a service medal with Waziristan clasp. I can't find out much about the campaign or the Battalion's part in it though. Does anyone have any details re this action or have any ideas as to where I can look next. Thanks. Paul

Europe / Crook family in France 1923 approx
« on: Sunday 04 March 18 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am wondering if one of my late relatives lived in France during the early 1920s. His name was Sidney Crook and might have lived in Chinon area. How would I go about finding out if he did live there for a few year after the war.

Thanks

Paul Crook
