Can anyone please tell me what Regimental uniform these men are wearing. Also the men at the front are not wearing shiny buttons or even a hat, why would that be. This is dated about 1912. Thank you in advance.

My great grandfather Edgar Matthews was born in 1884 in New Cross. I have found a record of him on; Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service 1756-1900, 97th Foot Soldiers. He was 13. What would he have done at that age and what war, if any would he have fought in. He is listed as being a musician. I know he played the trumpet and was a drummer in the East Surrey Regiment in 1914 as this is listed on my grandfathers birth certificate. In 1901 he is on the census as being in Maidstone Barracks, what regiment was there then? I cant find any war record for him, but knowing my luck his was a 'burnt record'. Can anyone help me please, im just finding more questions than answers. Thanking you in advance.
