Graveyards and Gravestones / How can I locate a grave in Istanbul, Turkey?
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
I know the name of the cemetery -- Feriköy Latin Catholic Cemetery, also called Pangaltı Fransız Latin Katolik Mezarlığı in Turkish -- and I know the name of the person I think might be buried there, but I don't know his year of death, the plot number, or even if he's buried there at all.  Year of death could be any time after 1860 and no later than 1923.  I have checked FindAGrave, nothing came up.

His name is TOMASO LUIGI MADELLA, alternately spelled TOMMASO, and sometimes given with the English version of his name, THOMAS LOUIS MADELLA or TOMAS LOUIS MADELLA.

I'm 90% certain he died in Constantinople.  He was Italian, baptised as a baby in Constantinople, in the Catholic Church of SS. Peter & Paul, so he has got to be in the Catholic cemetery.  There might be lots of other Madellas in the same cemetery.  Tomaso may be in the same grave as other family members.  He had 11 siblings, all of whom died in Constantinople between 1834 and 1908.  His parents also died in Constantinople and both were Catholics.

His father was Domenico MADELLA, born in Mantua, Italy circa 1783, died 18th Feb 1853, in Constantinople, aged about 70.  Ref.  Old Parish Death Registers of Constantinople, Church of St. Mary Draperis, Book no. 6.  His mother was Anna MARCOPOLI, baptised 7 Aug 1791 Constantinople, died 6 Jan 1861 Constantinople, aged 69.  Old Parish Death Registers Catholic Church of St. Anthony of Padua, Book no. 44/491 and Church of St. Mary Draperis.

Short of getting on a plane to Istanbul and wandering around the cemetery, how can I find Tomaso?

Other Countries / Looking for OPR Birth & Baptism in Constantinople (Istanbul) 1800s
« on: Sunday 05 November 23 06:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking to verify an Old Parish Register for a Birth & Baptism at the Catholic Church of St. Peter & St. Paul in Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey circa 1813 to 1823 (+/- 1 year).

I want document confirmation of the birth and baptism of Tomaso Louis MADELLA (sometimes spelled Tommaso), an Italian subject, son of Domenico MADELLA and Anna MARCOPOLI, both Italian, who were married in the same church on 1st November 1814.

I have one source saying Tomaso was born and baptised in 1823, and another source saying it was 1813, which would make the birth illegitimate, so it's quite important to get the year right.

How can I clear this up?  Are there any online resources for Catholic OPRs in Istanbul?  I found the address & tel. no. for the parish in question but no email address:  Church of SS. Peter and Paul,  Galata Kulesi Sok. (also written as Kuledibi) 44 /Istanbul, Turkey.  Tel. +90 212 249 23 85
Is there anyone on RootsChat living in Istanbul who could call the Parish Priest for me? They are probably a bit busy today, being a Sunday.

Tomaso Louis Madella was one of 12 children.  More info here:  https://gw.geneanet.org/marmara2?lang=en&pz=mathilde&nz=d+andria&p=thomas+louis+dr&n=madella

On that record, his birth is given as 5th November, 1823 at SS. Peter & Paul, Constantinople -- BOOK 2/1 r (Image no. _8474).  Baptism in the same parish 28th November 1823 with Godfather Dr. Louis Bichi and Godmother Maria Riccio -- same book ref. no. and image no.  Where can I find those images and parish registers online?

Coincidentally, Tomaso's birthday is today.  He was my GG grandfather. Happy Birthday, GG Grandad! :)

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Where could I look for and/or get a copy of an Emergency Certificate of British Nationality issued to an Italian national in 1922?

The Lighter Side / Family you thought you wanted to know ...

Isn't it great when you find your 6th cousin 3rd removed, you exchange details, and then suddenly there's nothing left to talk about?

There is no handwriting on the back, but I know the corporal on the left is William Stuart Coutts (1938-2008).

This was probably taken around 1956-57, possibly in Germany (British Army of the Rhine).

Possible to remove all creases and the arrow that has been inked in over William's head?

I do not know the soldier on the right, but can anyone identify the regimental badge on his left shoulder?  I can just about make out a rearing lion (or bear?) facing dexter.

And what is the military heraldic symbol on the wall, behind William's head?

Wall mounted photos of The Queen Mother and Prince Charles as a boy are visible.  Prince Charles was born in 1948, and he looks about 8 or 9 years old in that portrait.

There is graffiti near the ceiling saying "Hunter Squadron".  The Hunter F1 aircraft entered RAF service with 43 Squadron in July 1954.

I can also see graffiti saying "653 SQN", which probably refers to No.653 Squadron RAF.  This unit became part of the British Army Air Corps in September 1957.

This pic might have been taken in an RAF Mess, but the 2 soldiers are definitely Army.

Any help with photo restoration and background identification greatly appreciated.

---

Just noticed on the back:  this is an Agfa photo-postcard.  (German company)

---

Added:  "No. 653 Squadron was disbanded in Germany in 1945 after the German surrender, but came into being again in Cyprus on 11 May 1958." (Wiki)

This makes sense because I know for certain William Stuart Coutts was posted in Cyprus in the 1950s.

So this picture was taken in 1958 or later.

This was taken outside the Pier Hotel, Portsmouth (England) in August 1939, according to the handwriting on the back.   The lady on the left is Frances Eleanor Coutts, nee LANE (1912-1990).  On the right, her mother: Frances Mary or May Lane, nee MEW (1866-1951).  Both from the Isle of Wight.  They're probably on a day trip to Portsmouth.

Badly creased and damaged.  Restoration much appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / Constance LANE, Michigan, 1928...
« on: Monday 10 February 14 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what happened to my great aunt Connie in the US after 1928.

Constance LANE (1907-?)

b. October 1907 Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, chr. 6/10/1907 same place.
dau. of George LANE (1864-1933 Isle of Wight UK) & Frances Mary MEW (1866-1951 Isle of Wight UK) who were married in 1897 at East Cowes.

Connie, aged 3, is on the 1911 census of England & Wales with her family at East Cowes, Isle of Wight.  Her father George is a gardener.

In 1923, Connie / Constance Lane, aged 15.5, travelled to the US for the first time with her parents & 2 sisters on board the SS Mauretania.  Their final destination is Detroit, Michigan.  Connie is a domestic servant.  Father, George, a gardener.
(on Ellis Island records)

Connie must have returned to England at some point between 1923 and 1928.  In 1928 she sailed from the UK to the US again, with her sister Mabel.  They are both single that year, working as housekeepers, last permanent residence: Detroit.  Their destination address is 1381 Three Miles Drive, Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

And that's where I lose Connie.  I can't find any marriages for her or death certs.

According to oral family stories, she settled in the US and was still alive there in the early 1980s, in her 70s by then.  But the anecdotes are 30 years old; might be fuzzy.

Her elder sister Mabel Lane married a Canadian but lived in Detroit, MI, where they died in 1964.

It would be great to find out what happened to Connie, or to follow any leads.

US Lookup Requests / Sutherland, 1930 US Census
« on: Monday 10 February 14 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for a Gordon Hugh SUTHERLAND a.k.a. Hugh Gordon SUTHERLAND on the 1930 US census.

Born 1901 Canada.  Both parents Canadian.  Immigration to US 1906.
Gordon married 1928, Lucas County, Ohio:  Mabel Phoebe LANE, b. Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, 1905.  In 1928 they were both resident in Detroit, Michigan.

I'm expecting to see them in Detroit in 1930, an infant child of theirs died there in March 1929, but can't find the couple on the census.  There were no other children that I know of.

Family Search yields only one possible match in San Francisco, CA.  ED 372.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XCNH-QT4
His age is a bit out, and I find it unlikely they would have moved to CA but not impossible.

I know the 1930 US census is free online on Archive.org but I can't find the couple that year.

I have them in Detroit in 1937 and 1940 and they both died there in 1964.

Any help much appreciated.
