The Common Room / How to edit Tags in Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 30 August 23 23:35 BST (UK)  »
I have written tags for several people in my family tree.

Now find that I would like to make some edits; however, cannot find the appropriate "EDIT" command, and cannot just overwrite the edit.
What am I missing?

The Common Room / Percentage of “Smith” surname in 1911
« on: Monday 14 August 23 15:35 BST (UK)  »
We know that “Smith” is the most common surname in England.

For a specific research purpose, I am trying to determine just what % of the population it was in the 1911 Census of Eng. & Wales,

a) in England alone,

b) in Wales alone,

c) in England & Wales together.

Are these data published somewhere that I have yet to locate?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Inheritance of DNA
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 19:01 BST (UK)  »
We know that we inherit our DNA from our parents.

It’s almost automatic to think 50% mother & 50% father.

However, it is known that it is never exactly 50:50.

Has it ever been determined what the extreme values are? 60/40, 70/30/, 80/20, 95/5?

Or even an average value, if such a thing exists?

The Common Room / Attrition
« on: Friday 31 March 23 18:59 BST (UK)  »
A question aimed at the actuaries.

I was born in London at the beginning of 1943.

In 1954 I entered my grammar school (all-boys) along with 95 other 11-yr old boys.

How many of us 96 were still alive at midnight on Dec. 31, 2022?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA 50:50 ?
« on: Sunday 05 February 23 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
My wife has All-Irish ancestry, except a great-grandmother from Switzerland.

As expected for a 50:50 DNA contribution, my wife’s DNA shows 12% North European (100—>50—>25—>12).

However, if the DNA is not a 50:50 contribution at each generation, such a 12% N European match is theoretically possible by episodes of excessive and minimal contribution from the Swiss lady’s genes.

For instance, 100—>80—>40—>12 which has only a single 50:50 contribution.

Are such wide swings from 50:50 known or common?

The Common Room / Find common ancestor in another tree
« on: Saturday 04 February 23 02:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have a family tree in Ancestry.
Hints to an ancestor are given by a green leaf.
Clicking on a green leaf invariably  shows "Found in other trees"
Clicking on the other tree and doing a search of people in the tree shows that the ancestor is there.
However, very often cannot find that ancestor in the tree.
How do I force the other tree to show the ancestor?

Regards,
JMB

EDIT: Found it!!!!  Click on "Tools", then "Show in Tree"

Sussex / Harry Hill--Publican, Brighton
« on: Saturday 07 January 23 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
According to the family story, my great-grandfather was at some time (1890??-1910??) "mine host" at the Queen's Head, adjacent to the railway station.

I have been unable to find any records to either confirm or refute this.

Can anybody help with any information?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / How to proceed?
« on: Thursday 05 January 23 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
Having an issue with the father of my grandfather on the paternal side, I recently had my dna tested by Ancestry.

I summarize the results briefly below.

1) No starred matches
2) There are 8 close family matches, ranging from 380 cM (5% shared dna; 19 segments; 1st- 2nd cousins) to 205 cM (3% shared dna; 2nd-3rd cousins).
3) Only one of the 8 close family matches has an accessible, viable tree and it relates to the maternal side of my tree.
4) The highest ranked tree that is derived from my paternal side shows 162 cM (2% shared dna; 12 segments; 2nd-3rd cousins)
5) My father was an only child, he and his father are both dead.

What are my options, if any, to try to generate more matches for my father’s ancestors?

The Common Room / Recover complete Tree— iPad
« on: Wednesday 04 January 23 00:32 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently looked at an Ancestry tree of 800 people using an iPad.

Isolated a group of 5-6 people, and now cannot return to the original , complete tree.
Have exited and then re-entered the tree, but no change.

Any hints gratefully received.

JMB
