Hi

Can anyone help me with locating the parents of Edward Darbishire and Mary Summerfield?

They were married on 21st April 1664 in Wem, Shropshire.

Also can you help with the parents of Johaness Latewood and Maria Payne who were married on 23rd February 1687 at Pulverbatch, Shropshire.

Many thanks

Eric

Hi

I have ancestors Benjamin Lund and Mary Fennick marrying at St Maurice, York 15th January 1744.

I believe Mary died in 1771. However i cannot trace any birth records for Benjamin or Mary, (and no death records for Benjamin).

May I ask the Rootschat brains trust to have a go and tracking them down?

Many thanks.

Gloucestershire / John Sansum - Tailor of Dursley
« on: Tuesday 15 December 20 17:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am having trouble finding the marriage and birth of Samuel Sansum and Deborah. They had their son John baptised on 5th June 1744 at Dursley, Gloucestershire.

Now John was a Tailor, (he witnessed a marriage Bond in 1768, showing his occupation). This information was found on the Gloucestershire Archive website. On the same website you will see 2 Wills for a 'John Sansum', one 1732, (Occupation Weaver), and another 1749 (Occupation clothworker), both in Avening. It may be just coincidence but all 3 John Sansums are in the clothes trade, so is there a link here?

Thanks for reading this post.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Crime and Punishment in York

Hi

I have found a record of a William Peniston showing he was found guilty of horse stealing, (1833), and given life imprisonment. This can be found on Anc.com. I seem to remember reading that sometimes these sentences weren't carried out or were commuted. Can anyone enlighten me more? This has stemmed from a post which i have given a link to below, if anyone can help me with both posts i would be indebted to them

Hi Everyone, can you help me in solving a who dunnitt?

I found the following which, at the time i believed was a my relative. It was an article relating to Lobster House Petty Sessions from the Yorkshire Gazette dated 10/12/1859,  I assume it should read....."labourers, all of Haxby", it states

"J. Agar, Esq., and the Rev. F. Simpson, William Pennystone, Francis Driffield, and William Pullan, labourers, all of IIaxby, were summoned for assanlting Mr. Bell, landlord of the Castle Howard Ox, Groves, on the sth ult. Fined 55., and costs 12s"

I based my assumption on the 1851 Haxby Census where you will see William Penneystone, (Ag Lab, born c1816) wife Jane. However, if you look at the 1861 Census you will see another William Penneystone, (Platelayer born c1821), wife Mary. I don't think they are one of the same person as they have different places of birth, but I am open to offers!!

I have checked and one of the other men charged, a Frances Driffield, who is a brick maker, is on both the 1851 and 1861 census at Haxby. However i cannot find a William Pullan at Haxby anywhere. I have also tried to find my William Penneystone on the 1861 census, but no luck.

I did contact York Archives who told me that they do not have any 19th century records for the court, (i understand the petty sessions were later renamed Magistrates courts).

I just favour it may be the Penneystone on the 1851 census as he had a son, George, and I have found from the York Herald dated 15th January 1859, (and yes, i know, you can't allege criminalty on the deeds of their father, or in this case visa versa!)

"Robbery at llaxby.—On Wednesday, at Messrs. Seymour's olfice, in this city, before T. Barstow, Esq., and J. Agar, Esq., George Penneystone, a small farmer, was charged with having stolen about two quarters of barley, of the value of 10s., the property of"

I also have something from a court just showing a George (Penneystone?),name, charge and sentence, (its from the 5th April 1859 Easter sessions at Northallerton). Can't remember where i got this from, probably FindMyPast.com). So I guess the same applies to George, would there be any other records of the court?

So can anyone help? I would hope there would be petty session records somewhere showing the age of the 3 defendants in the case. Does anyone know where they may be? I really would like to find out as the Castle Howard Ox pub still exists in York and I would love to surprise my sister when we go there.

Many thanks for reading this post.

Armed Forces / Warwickshire and Shropshire Milita
« on: Monday 07 December 20 14:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My Great x 4 Grandfather was a Richard Hickman, who I believe was born Birmingham, 1766.

I have who I think is him being married. The parish records state:

6/4/1799 • Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Extract from Midlothian Parish Records - 1799 Banns/Marriage in Canongate, Edinburgh.Text: Hickman, Richard, serjint in the Shropeshire Malitia, and Maria Gibson, daughter of Robert Gibson, coachman in Musselburgh 06 Apr 1799 Book: Register of Marriages.

Now I have discharge papers for a Sgt Richard Hickman from the Warwickshire militia. They show service between 22/2/1800 and 14/11/1825. If memory serves i do think they were up in Edinburgh at the start of the 19th century.  The discharge papers also said he had been a corporal for 4 years 10 days and then a Searjeant for 20 years 100 days

So I need to know, if a soildier of the Militia got married whilst on a 'tour of duty'and then his original unit were posted elsewhere could he get transferred to another unit that was remaining in the area? If so would the fact that he was a Corporal in his new unit be evidence that, to stay, he had to take a demotion? Also as he was a Corporal would that confirm he had to have come from another military unit? Any help gratefully received. I cannot find a suitable death record for him a tthe moment but i guess that may be for another day!

Many thanks

Lancashire / Mary Rosall Born c 1734
« on: Saturday 21 November 20 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I hold a 1768 marriage bond, (dated 1/7/1768), for a Samuel Aston and a Marry Rosall. It was found On-Line at Lancashire Archives and states that Mary Rosall was a widow aged 34. They were married in the parish of Poulton-Le-Fylde, (on 2/7/1768).

I assume the name Rosall would have been her 1st husbands surname. I have tried finding the 1st marriage and all i can come up with, that looks a possible, is a Richard Rosall marrying a Mary Hudson in Garstang in 1753, (12 miles away), but I cannot find a burial record for him.

Can some kind person help me out?

Many thanks

Bedfordshire / Elizabeth Drage - Bedfordshire
« on: Monday 16 November 20 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead!!!

Ok maybe not so dramatic. I have a relative Thomas Coles Born 1764 in Puddington, Bedford,  Bedfordshire. Father John Coles and Mother Elizabeth Drage.

I have found John Coles birth, (1739), but not death although it may be on the UK, Burial and Cremation Index, 1576-2014 held with Deceased Online, (year of death 1783). I thought FindMyPast had that record set but nothing is coming up. So, before this poor pensioner needs to pay, if anyone has got sight of the index I would be grateful to know what information it has.

For Elizabeth Drage, i cannot fine anything for birth or death, so any help would be appreciated in tracking the lady down.

Thanks

Eric

Staffordshire / Edward Harley - Baptised 1735
« on: Saturday 14 November 20 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have found within the collection, England, 'Staffordshire, Church Records, 1538-1944', on Familyhistory a baptism for Edward Harley 8/2/1735, Fathers name Harley, (very helpful!!), at St Augustine, Rugeley.

I don't see this collection on FindMyPast or Anc, or, if it is, it does not come up with a hit for Edward Harley. Has anyone got a CD or paper copies of the St Augustines parish records. If so could they possible have a shufty to see if  there is any more information held for the baptism?

NB Later baptisms from St Augustines do appear with more information on Anc

Many thanks.

Eric
