The Common Room / Ancestry - Public Tree Members being trawled by Private Tree Members
« on: Friday 18 September 15 18:08 BST (UK)  »
I have a reasonable size public family tree on Ancestry with photos, records and information. I am happy for people to view and copy items from my tree and I do the same on other public trees, that is why so many of us go public on Ancestry. We all help each other and you never know you may get a link with family you never knew existed.

What does tick me off though is recently I am being trawled a lot for my photos and copies of old documents etc. by members who keep their own personal trees private. I have in the past sent messages to these privateers to see why they are interested in something from my tree just in case there is a connection but in most cases I get no reply.

If they want to keep their information to themselves then that is their business but if they do copy from public trees at least have the decency to send a quick note saying thank you.

Anglesey / Which prison for Anglesey offenders?
« on: Monday 15 June 15 18:55 BST (UK)  »
Which prison would an offender be sent to from Anglesey in 1856.

I have a possible lead on an ancestor who was found guilty of theft at the Beaumaris quarterly sessions in 1856. He was sentenced to six years penal servitude.

Is it likely to be Beaumaris Gaol?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Different results for siblings?
« on: Tuesday 21 April 15 16:55 BST (UK)  »
I am told that DNA test results for ethnicity can vary between siblings due to individual mutation. My brother and I have tried this and it seems the variation does occur although the difference is small.

It came as a surprise to us both and also the family. I am assuming that this is the mutation effect showing through but also that the results are estimates as many of the testing companies state.

Has anyone else come across this as well?

Before anyone asks....yes we do have the same biological parents ;D

Hi

Please can anyone find a baptism record of a Hugh Williams/Hughes born in Liverpool between 1804 and 1808?

Hugh seems to have used the surname Williams for most of his adult life but I believe this was an anglicised version of the welsh patronymic form Huw ap William (Hugh son of William). His father was a William Hughes - occupation Tailor so if Hugh was born in Liverpool it is more likely that his baptism name will have been Hugh Hughes.

I have records of him from 1840 onwards living in Anglesey and Bangor area in North Wales so he must have left Liverpool before 1840. The 1851 and 1861 census both state Liverpool as his birth place with 1871 showing Anglesey (his last census before his death in 1880). As usual the 1841 census was not much help as he was living in Caernarfonshire at that time and his birthplace was listed as outside the county.

Whilst I accept its a long shot with the names Williams and Hughes in Liverpool at that time, any information will be gratefully received.

Thanks

Caernarvonshire / Brillin or Brittin in Llanfairfechan?
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 18:44 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where a place or property called either Brillin or Brittin is in Llanfairfechan?

I lived in Llanfairfechan many years ago but I cannot recall a place of that name.

My 3x G-grandfather William Roberts was born there in 1783. I have checked old maps but can only get back as far as the mid 1800's and nothing shows up. The last entry of its existence that I have, is of Richard Roberts my 4x G-grandfather's burial in the parish register in 1794.

The baptism record for William Roberts actually says Brillin/Brittin Row so I suspect its a row of cottages rather than a stand alone property.

Any ideas will be greatly received.

Thanks

Caernarvonshire / Conway Workhouse Records - admissions
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody know where I can obtain records of admissions of persons to Conway Workhouse? I have contacted Conwy Archives but although they hold extensive records they do not have any records of persons admitted to the workhouse.

I have found a burial record in Gyffin of a lady who fits the frame for my ggg-grandmother but sadly this particular lady's last address was the Conway Workhouse.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Anglesey / Who are David Jones & Owen Hughes?
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
My great-grandfather was born in Llangefni or Pentraeth in 1855 but I cannot find any birth record for him neither birth registry or baptism. However, he is not the main problem....it is his father!

Throughout his life my great-grandfather was known on official records as Owen Hughes apart from two, his marriage certificate and the birth certificate of his eldest child (my grandmother) where he is recorded as Owen Hughes-Jones. On his marriage certificate his father is listed as David Jones and that is the only time he appears. Sadly David's occupation is almost illegible but I have it on good authority that its "Horse Carter". I suspect that my g-grandfather may have been illegitimate and he took his mother's surname of Hughes for most of his life.

If anyone can find a David Jones living in Llangefni or Pentraeth at around 1855 I would be interested to know. I am suspecting that David was relatively young when my g-grandfather was born as my gg-grandmother was only about 17 years old at the time of Owen's birth.

I have looked up births of an Owen Hughes and an Owen Jones and a combination of the two but there are so many out there that it would cost a small fortune to get all the certificates.

Any help on finding who David Jones was or even a birth for Owen my g-grandfather will be gratefully received.

The Common Room / Causes of death....are they correct?
« on: Monday 22 September 14 15:52 BST (UK)  »
How accurate were the causes of death recorded on death certificates during the 1800's? Is it possible that certain types of fatal diseases or causes may have been omitted from death certificates in order to reduce the concerns of the family or the community?

I have just received a copy of my 2x great-grandmother's death certificate, she died at the young age of 22 years in 1861. For someone so young I was expecting a tragic accident, a death during child birth or a contagious disease etc. I was surprised to see that she died of a "Disease of the Heart - Certified". Whilst it is possible she could have had a congenital heart defect I am still surprised that with this she still managed to hold down an arduous job as a Farm Maid and also have a child.

On the other side of my family, my 3x great-grandmother died in the 1840's at the age of 40 with "Cramps" and was buried the same day she died. Her husband had died (same age) a couple of years before of "Liver Complaint" and he too was buried the same day as he died. Does this suggest that because of their burial on the same day that they died, there was more to their death than was admitted?

Was there a misdiagnosis, a cover up or am I just being paranoid and that my ancestors were just unfortunate with their untimely deaths?

Anglesey / The Menai Bridge Inn/Tavern, High Street, Llangefni?
« on: Monday 07 July 14 13:38 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody please have any information about the Menai Bridge Inn/Tavern in Llangefni?

My ancestors ran the pub from the 1830's through to about the 1900's. The pub was located on the corner of the High Street and Field Street but I believe it may have closed in about 1905.

I have a record of my ancestors being there in the 1841 census through to the 1901 census but the pub appears to change its name in about 1906 to Menai Bridge House which suggests it became a residentail property or another business after that.

The pub was initially run by a William Jones and then after his death his wife Catherine Jones before the final licensee being their daughter Sarah Williams (nee Jones).

Any information on this will be much appreciated.
