Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / STILES family
« on: Sunday 31 July 16 22:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Please could sks look up a baptism for John Stiles in 1805. I'm pretty sure he came from the Isle of Wight, but he may also have been born in Portsmouth. He went on to become Rear Admiral John Stiles and died in 1830. He left an estate in Wooton Bridge in the parish of Arreton, which was left to him by his father, and 2 freehold farms and an oasthouse in Newchurch IOW. He requested to be buried wherever he died, either at Southampton (which happened,) or at Wooton IOW. I also have a will for John Stiles of Arreton in 1803, leaving freehold messuages etc, (unnamed or located,) to his son John, which may be a connection.

He had cousins George Stiles and Carter Stiles of Bristol, and Charles Roe

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Titchfield baptism
« on: Thursday 05 November 15 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Could sks please have a look at Titchfield baptisms for ELIZABETH FRIAR BURTON born June qtr 1849 to James and Mary Burton. James was a commissioned boatman (Coastguard,) living at 18 Hillhead, Titchfield by 1851. He had been at the Lancing Station up to 1848 certainly, and Elizabeth Friar was probably born there, but there is no baptism for her at either Lancing or East Preston CofE churches. The family might have been 'chapel', but I shall have to work on a process of elimination. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / MITCHELL - EWELL
« on: Friday 26 December 08 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have a family in the 1851 census as follows:
Cuddington, Ewell, Surrey
Thomas Mitchell Head Mar 29 Gamekeeper Surrey, Kingswood
Eliza           "       Wife  Mar 30 Wife                  "       Betchworth
Henry         "      Son             2                          "       Cuddington
Mark           "         "               4 mo                    "              "
Richard      "       Bro  Unm  14                      Sussex, Ardingly
Elizabeth    "       Sis           12                           "              "

I can not find any of them in subsequent census. Did they emigrate?

I believe that Thomas was the son of John Mitchell and Elizabeth Cheasley who were married at Ewell in 1820, may have had a daughter, Sarah, in 1824, and then 5 more children born at Ardingly Sussex, before John died in 1838.

Elizabeth was back at Ewell with the family in 1841, but I would be happy to find out what happened to Thomas. Australia perhaps?

Thanks

John

Essex Lookup Requests / DEBDEN Monumental Inscriptions
« on: Monday 08 September 08 16:02 BST (UK)  »
I have a record of a gravestone in Debden churchyard from the 19th century, and would like to know whether the gravestone still exists. I know that the gravestones have been moved and stand around the walls of the churchyard. Have the MIs been recorded, and if so where are they?

Many thanks

Cambridgeshire / ELSWORTH families in America
« on: Sunday 22 June 08 21:25 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone give me a primary source (ie Marriage Register) for the marriage of John Ellsworth to Lucia Bower 20 Dec 1613 in Cambridgeshire, England, or his birth on 3 Feb 1578 also in Cambridgeshire. (Note: Ancestral File is not a primary source, it is a fairy tale!)
I would like to give a prize to the first person who can give me the information, but I don't think it will be forthcoming. Or perhaps you know better?
Thanks

Essex Lookup Requests / Hempstead parish registers - WESTLEY
« on: Sunday 08 June 08 18:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Does any kind soul have access to the registers for Hepstead? I am keen to sort out my WESTLEY family, and this parish is not on the IGI.

Also, anyone else out there 'doing' Westleys? I'm looking at the 17th century and earlier, but not later than 1710.

Many thanks

Essex Lookup Requests / VERLANDER in Colchester
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning

I have found a marriage of Jacob Verlander to Judith Pawsey at St Nicholas Colchester 22 April 1788. Please could someone give me some more detail? I am fairly sure that the Verlanders, and the Pawseys were non-conformists. Where is the nearest non-conformist (probably congregational) chapel in Colchester? Judith Pawsey may have been born around 1760, and may also have a sister named Dorothy born circa 1744.

Any info gratefully received.

Have a good one.
