The Common Room / What happened to Convicts Central please?
« on: Saturday 11 April 20 12:43 BST (UK)  »
I used this fabulous site many times a few years ago. Now it seems unavailable. Bring it back!!

Are there any similar; sites that give the same detailed information that this did - descriptions; offences committed; ships etc

I was looking for Charles Beasley/Beazley sent on the 'Barwell' 1797 to presumably NSW
Found his death & 2 possible marriages but would have like a description & offence

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions

The Common Room / GRO downloads
« on: Saturday 20 January 18 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
I was about to order another PDF,  while this offer at £6 continues,  but on doing the search I came across two entries which were only one year apart. Remembering that some months ago I had sent for one of these, which turned out to be wrong, I looked to see which one it was so as to make sure I applied for the correct one.

I was surprised that there are no volume or page numbers on the downloads. As the certificate was sent for over 3 months ago, and GRO do not keep a copy of orders after this, I had no record of which of the two I had sent for previously
So...may I suggest that you write the volume and page number on your copy as soon as you download it .

Apologies if this has already been raised.

Australia / NSW Lockley descendants? Holden;Reed; Willcocks;Hunter
« on: Monday 11 September 17 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello Australia
I am GT GT niece of Thomas Lockley who arrived Sydney 1879 and married widow Ellen A Hunter in 1891.

She had a daughter Parthenia and they went on to have Frederick,Charles.  b 1900 and Isabella b 1893. They all married. Their names were then Parthenia Holden,  Isabella Reed and Frederick married Florence Willcocks in 1926.

It's been quite an emotional journey tracking the life of Thomas. I did manage to get a photo of his grave but not a photo of him.
If anyone is doing their family tree out there for this family I would love to get in contact .
Fingers crossed
Pauline

The Common Room / WDYTYA Emma Willis... How did they find that?
« on: Wednesday 23 August 17 22:43 BST (UK)  »
Cast your minds back to this episode. I have replayed it numerous times now.

To refresh: Emma's GT GT GT Grandfather was James Gretton who married Mary Ann Yere - also shown as
" Yerl "  They lived in Birmingham and had children there.
It seems they later went separate ways and each had another child with other partners without divorcing.
James stayed in Birmingham and according, to the researcher speaking to Emma at Birmingham Library, MaryAnn went to Middlesex.
This is the bit I cannot get. Mary Ann (Gretton/ Yere/Yerl) had a child in1867, also Mary Ann, with a Joseph Kilby BUT on the birth certificate it shows the mother's maiden name as " GERL"

For all of us searching for disappearing mothers .........could someone give me a clue as to how this birth was found with all the various surnames she had and how likely it is to be accurate?
I'm sure I must be missing the obvious!!

Family History Beginners Board / Catholic Records
« on: Tuesday 15 September 15 22:43 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a viewpoint on whether there could still be some Catholic records that are out there but not recorded on the GRO?
I am searching for a marriage that was not before 1838, as an illegitimate girl was born and baptised in that year ( C of E ) to my 2x GT grandmother who was then stated as single. Shortly after the birth the child was registered with the name of my 2x GT grandfather as the father, and  the mother's surname has changed to his!. (baby dies 5 months later with the same parents recorded)
The following year, Sept 1839, they have their first son followed by 4 more. I still  have not found the marriage. However, I did find that sons 3 & 4 were baptised as Catholics. I have been unable to find the other boys baptisms. I was surprised to discover the Catholic connection and believe this could only have come from the mother's side.
On discovering a Catholic connection I went to  St Chad's Birmingham to look at marriage records but discovered no more. As they were not married in early 1838, when the little girl was born, the marriage had to be  after this. Interesting that the babtism was C of E. Would she have been refused a Catholic babtism?
MY QUERY:- Does anyone believe, or have evidence, that there are some Catholic records out there that never made it onto the GRO around 1838? Or to the records of the diocese?
Is the only option for me to knock on the doors of these local churches and ask the question?
I know that many priests did not want to hand over their documents as they themselves required evidence of babtism before they would marry and I did read that only a small percentage eventually agreed to passing on their records, many choosing to ignore the Civil Registration Act of 1837. The more I read the more I feel this marriage could still be waiting to be discovered.
If anyone has any clues, or experiences of Catholic searches,  I would welcome your opinions on this.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Sarah Lockley nee Cooper vanishes
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. First post today!!
Sarah married Thomas Lockley (my 2x Gt Uncle) at  Holy Trinity Wednesfield 03/03/1862. Both their fathers were also Thomas. Lived Willenhall.
Husband gets transported to W Australia in 1864/5, He does return in 1878 only to go back following year to Sydney.
Have loads of info on his imprisonment if needed.
Meanwhile Sarah disappears. Nothing conclusive on 1871 census. She lost both children. Have certs.
There is a Sarah Lockley, single mother, has a child, Arthur John Lockley, by an Arthur Cartwright in Bloxwich 1872. Believe he marries a Sarah Ellen Thomas 23/12/1894.  (thanks for that-all these Sarah's & Thomas' !!!) Could this be her?

As there are many deaths for a Sarah Lockley, and she may have changed her name or moved, I cannot discover what became of her. I have no real background information for her family only that her father was Thomas and he was a miner. I think she was born in Wrockwardine Salop 1842.
Is there anyone who has researched this line of Coopers please. Or the Cartwrights? Father Arthur also vanishes.
It's crazy that I care as Sarah is no blood relative but I have spent such a long time walking in
her sad shoes I would like to know what became of her. She would have been free to remarry due to the 8year transportation sentence.
Waiting with baited breath.
Thanks
Paula
