Armed Forces / Northern Cyclist Battalion magazine
« on: Monday 06 November 23 06:46 GMT (UK)  »
Morning All

I'm trying to trace a copy of "the northern mudguard" the regimental magazine of the Northern Cyclist Battalion from World War One, I don't suppose anyone has come across it in an archive somewhere?

Thanks very much,

Michael

Northumberland / Major Dawson central school camp
« on: Wednesday 12 July 23 09:07 BST (UK)  »
Morning All,

I've just discovered a distant relative who at the age of 12 was recorded on the 1921 census as being at Major Danson central school camp near west Pykes field (the summary says Mr Pyke's field) in Rothbury.

There appears to be over 60 people there, mostly young teenage boys but also a few girls, some married couples and right at the end of the list a couple of teachers from Jarrow central school and an inspector from the board of education

I've tried a google search for this place but can't find anything. Has anyone ever come across it before?

Was it an actual school camp or was this code for a work house or similar?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Edit: title altered to help future searches

Northumberland / Newcastle War Pensions Hospital
« on: Friday 26 May 23 13:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've just discovered a relative was a patient at Newcastle War Pensions Hospital when he died in 1926, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it or if there might be any records that survive from it?

I have his WW1 pension cards but sadly none of them mention what his injuries were or give any clues of why he might be there.

Thanks for the help,

Michael

Hi All,

This is a photo of my great uncle, Norman Henderson, on his wedding day in Newcastle.

Is anyone able to colour the photo for me please? I've tried some of the apps and Ancestry but none seem to be able to cope with his Royal Navy uniform.

Thanks very much,

Michael

The Common Room / What is DOA on a birth certificate
« on: Friday 17 February 23 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Does anyone know what DOA on a birth certificate means?

It's not dead on arrival as the person is now in their 80's and very much alive.

The certificate has the person's date of birth the DOA and a date 8 years later.

Could it be date of adoption? Would that go on a birth certificate?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

The Common Room / Birth registered twice ????
« on: Monday 16 January 23 20:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm looking for some help with a distant relative who's birth appears to have been registered twice, I can't post it in the relevant geographical area or name names as the birth was in 1946 and people are still around.

Here's what I've found:

My relatives had their 4th son in December 1946.

Free BMD shows he was registered under his mother's maiden name and her first husband's name.

The husband and wife split up (exact date unknown) and she remarried in June 1947.

I then did a search on the mother's maiden name and the second husband's name to find children from her second marriage, what I found was the same child born in December 1947 registered in the same geographical area but now to the second husband.

A brother of the person in question said he was told the second husband was the father but the mother had registered him in the first husband's name as she wasn't divorced yet.

My questions are:

Can that be done (as in being registered twice)?

How do I find the real father?

Would he have 2 birth certificates?

Sorry for the cryptic description and questions but I don't want to break any rules or identify the people by accident.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Northumberland / Help needed to identify Elizabeth English
« on: Friday 30 December 22 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've been looking into my great great grandmother Mary Hall (b.1871) from North Shields and thought I had finished until I spotted a story in the newspapers about her and her second husband (Richard Wright) to do with a child witnessing an affair resulting in the death of the other woman!

The story says Richard was seen by his step daughter Elizabeth Mary English who went and told her mother.

Mary Hall was first married to Charles English (b. 1871 in North Shields) in 1890, he died in an accident at the local gasworks in 1896 but as far as I know Charles and Mary had four children:

William English born 1889
Charles English born 1891
Jane English born 1893
Mary Isabella English born 1894

Mary married her second husband Richard in 1900

I can't find Elizabeth Mary English on any census however the 1901 census has a 5 year old Isabella English as a daughter in law (Charles and Jane are also down as in law's rather than step children). None of Charles and Mary's children are on the 1911 census with Richard and Mary, it is just their children (ie from her second marriage).

The affair happened in 1906 1909 so I'm wondering if Elizabeth Mary English and Mary Isabella English is actually one and the same person?

Can anyone help confirm or deny this?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Northumberland / Old Seahouses Book
« on: Monday 10 October 22 16:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've been told there may be a photo of the elusive John Woodger in this book:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Old-Seahouses-Katrina-Porteous/dp/184033682X

I was wondering if anyone in the Newcastle area knew of a copy in any library so I can check before I buy it?

I've checked with North Shields, they don't have it.

Thanks a lot,

Michael
