Family History Beginners Board / Questions
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone ,
 I hope everyone is well.
I have a Thomas Rowland Thexton who was killed in WW1. I have the details of his WW1 army service but I believe he was in the army at some point before this. On Ancestry I only can find the War details. How do I go about finding if he was in the army before this?
And I suppose it was possible to not be on a census  as the did this. Is there any other way of finding a Mum and son in 1901?

Thanks Everyone .I really appreciate the help on this site. You are all brilliant. I am getting better at looking for some things but occasionally hit a wall.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1901 Census
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone.
I hope you are all well and staying safe.

I can't find Sarah Ann Thexton (Lilley) in 1901.
She was born in 1873 in Dudley and married 1893 to Thomas Rowland Thexton. I have found her eldest son Gilbert at School in Sheffield and her husband is boarding and put as being single? accidently? She should have Harry a two year old with her. She was born in Dudley and they lived in Sheffield and lived in Norwich for a time in 1904-5.

Family History Beginners Board / Can you look up someone via there work place?
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,
I hope everyone is safe and well.
I have a strange man that's appeared on a Child's death and another child's birth certificate.
In my tree I have a Sarah Ann Lilley also called May, born in Dudley in 1873 married to a Thomas Rowland Thexton in Sheffield in 1893.
On the 1901 Census I cannot find Sarah Ann (Lilley) Thexton or her two year old son Harry.
Their eldest son Gilbert is 7 and at school. Thomas is boarding and it says single? Accidently?

In 1904 Sarah gives birth to a Mary Lydia in Sheffield, the birth Cert says Thomas Rowland Thexton is Dad.
She unfortunately dies in Norwich that same year and her Death Cert says a Charles Henry Thexton/Thetford is Dad.It says he is a Public House Manager and address is 45 Timberhill Norwich.
Sarahs next child I have as Edna May Thexton born in Norwich on 9th Nov 1905.The only birth I can find is a Sarah Edna and her birth Cert. as Charles Henry Thetford as Dad. May Thetford formerly Thexton as Mum .Born at the Mariners Inn, Wymondham.

Now my questions are which Charles Henry Thetford is this can I look him up through his Pub?
Is it all a mistake and have I got the wrong person ? But it is strange on the Death cert for one child and birth cert for another not just one of them?
Would it be possible not to register a child? Maybe these are not the same children?

Sarah ultimately is back with Thomas Rowland and they have two more children, Patricia my Nan and Rowland.

Any help or advice will be gratefully received.

Family History Beginners Board / Burtons again!
« on: Sunday 24 May 20 14:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I am still looking for my Burton connection.I am trying to find out who John Burton's ( 1827 Alton Staffs died July 1910 Cheadle Staffs. Married Mary Butler in 1851.) Dad was. I think his Mum was an Ann as its on his Christening info. I just tried to order a wedding cert to find out but it won't let me as I only have possible months and year!

Has anyone got any tips? The wedding details on ancestry don't have the Banns or book with fathers name in.

Any tips for narrowing it down would be great.

Family History Beginners Board / Burtons of Alton and Oakamoor
« on: Sunday 17 May 20 15:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have been looking for a link between William Burton born 1869 in Oakamoor Staffordshire died 1925.He was married to Jane Critchlow and some other Burtons in the area. Descendants  of James Burton born in Alton in 1819 died Oct 1886 in Cheadle Staffs married to Lucy Nixon.I think quite a few of this family went to Australia and USA and returned? They live in neighboring areas and I can't believe the tree doesn't link somewhere but there are so many Burtons I
am getting quite mind boggled trying to sort them out.

If anyone could help that would be great.
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Suicide notes
« on: Tuesday 23 July 19 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My Grandfather was illegitimate and I believe his father committed suicide. So I have no links to
the family( although I believe he may have visited them once as a boy.)
Does anyone know how you get a Coroners report and would this contain a suicide note if there was one or would it have been destroyed? This was in 1925.

Thankyou

« on: Thursday 02 May 19 21:24 BST (UK)  »
I have been watching the House through Time program and he had the admission details of someone in an asylum. Does anyone know how you get these? And do you have to pay for them?

I have a John Watts born in Oldbury in 1850 who died in 1891 in the County Lunatic asylum Powick Upton on Severn. He was a widow with 5 daughters and I wondered why he was taken into the Asylum?

Family History Beginners Board / Mystery of Great Grandfather solved
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have just had information that my Great Grandad was a William Burton not Handley.
From Oakamoor not sure if that is the correct spelling. He was a farmer in Burton upon Trent or maybe Stoke on Trent. My Grandad was born in 1914.
William had a brother called Frederick and my Grandad was illegitimate.
Does anyone have any information about The Burton Family? I have found one in 1901 but Dad is down as case maker I think this is wrong as would be a farmer?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Marytm
