Surrey / Death from a cycling accident
« on: Monday 09 January 12 09:17 GMT (UK)  »
There was story in my family that my grandfather's brother died after an accident in a cycling race. His death certificate gives the following information:
Thomas Henry Marchant, age 29, died in Norwood Cottage Hospital, Upper Norwood, on 17 June 1899 from head injuries caused by an accidental fall from a bicycle. His occupation is given as a "Cycle manufacturer of Penge".

There was an inquest but I have been told that coroner's reports are no longer available.

Can anyone  advise me as to where I might possibly find further information as I would love to know if he was involved in cycle racing.
Many thanks

Hi
I should be very grateful for any information about the marriage of a Harriet Higgins in Croydon between March and June 1853.
She was the sister of my 2x great-grandfather, would have been about 30 years old and a widow.
Many thanks

Surrey / Eleanor Ede nee Whitmore
« on: Monday 24 October 11 15:14 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for descendants of Eleanor Ede, nee Whitmore. She was baptised in Reigate in 1809, married Josiah Ede at Buckland in 1828 and lived for the rest of her life in Reigate, dying in 1885 (I think).

Any information welcomed.

Armed Forces / Army wife
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 12:48 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to work out how the wife of a soldier in the early 19th century would have been able to join her husband in Ireland. The details are as follows:
I believe the soldier in question to be my 3x great grandfather who joined the 4th Light Dragoons about 1809, spent most of the following five years in a French POW camp but re-joined his regiment at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. They returned to the UK but, within weeks had been sent to Ireland. It appears that his wife and possibly one child joined them there as, on his discharge certificate dated November 5th 1818, there is a record of money being paid to help his wife and two children return to England.
Now, whether or not this man was my ancestor, I am curious as to how she would have got herself from Surrey to Ireland. The soldiers do not appear to have had leave when they returned from France, the couple in question could not write so how would she have known where he had gone, let alone got herself to somewhere in south west Ireland?
Any ideas would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance

Armed Forces / Wives accompanying a regiment
« on: Tuesday 16 August 11 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Does anyone know if regiments kept lists of wives who accompanied their husbands when posted overseas?
I am particularly interested in the 4th Light Dragoons when stationed in Ireland between 1814 and 1818.
I know the wife of the soldier I am interested in was there with him as mention is made of a payment made for him, his wife and two children to return to England when he was discharged.
I need to find her name, if possible, to make sure that I have the right person.
Thanks for any help.

Armed Forces / Serving in 19th century Ireland
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 10:49 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm that my great-great grandfather, William Whitmore, was born in Ireland while his father was serving there between 1814 and 1818. The baptismal records for Cahir, near Tipperary, the town given on censuses as his birthplace, have been checked but no record of his baptism has been found.
I wonder if anyone can tell me how likely it was that his mother would have followed her husband to Ireland at this time and also if the regiment would have had a chaplain so that he might have been baptised in the barracks.

Thanks

Ireland / National Archives Dublin
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 10:44 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me about finding someone to check out a parish's baptismal records in the National Archives in Dublin as I am, unfortunately, unable to do so myself.
I emailed someone on the list on their website but have not even had a reply.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Staffordshire / Fanny Chard
« on: Monday 26 July 10 08:34 BST (UK)  »
I should be grateful for any information about Fanny Chard. The following is all I have been able to find out about her so far:

1861 census:
Recorded as a visitor at the home of William and Emma Tomkinson at Codsall Wood. (I think they were her father and step-mother). Birthplace given as Bilston, year of birth c. 1830.
Also recorded is a Walter Chard, birthplace Bilston and year of birth c. 1860 and I assume he is her son.

1841 census:
Living with William and Emma Tomkinson at Gunstone.

Baptism: St Leonard's, Bilston, 30 September 1828. parents listed as William and Mary Tomkinson.

I cannot find any other information and would particularly like to find out when she married so any help would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance

Tipperary / Birth to English soldier
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 10:08 BST (UK)  »
Do you know of any way that I can find a record of the birth or baptism of my great-great grandfather who was born in 1817 or 1818.
He always gave his birthplace as Cahir, Ireland on censuses and it appears that his father was stationed there at that period, his regiment being the 4th Dragoons.
Thanks for any help.
