Lancashire / John Smith born in Atherton, Lancashire
« on: Tuesday 08 November 22 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help find me the marriage of John Smith and Sarah ..... He was born in Atherton, Lancashire, in 1794 and she was born in Tyldesley in 1797. They were living in Tyldesley until at least 1832, where their first five children were born, William and Ralph in 1825, Ellen in 1828, Jeremiah in 1830 and Henry in 1832. Their next child, Samuel, was born in Manchester in 1839. Any help would be welcome please.

Armed Forces / Bugler Billy Evans
« on: Tuesday 01 November 22 18:48 GMT (UK)  »
A friend has this little service book belonging presumably to an ancestor, with Service Book for Members of the English Church; Active Citizen Force South Africa 1914 printed on the cover. It also has handwriting on the cover:
Bugler Billy Evans
A1944
D.E.O.R.
Karibib & Windhoek
Presented by National Bank of South Africa
In faint pencil is written July 11, 1915

It was apparently a Thanksgiving Service after the surrender of German South West Africa on 9 July 1915. Inside is another name N W Fogarty. DEOR is the Duke of Edinburgh 's Own Rifles.
My friend's father was Arthur Evans b. 4.7.1901 and his brother was Robert Evans b.3.3.1893, who died in 1916 in German East Africa. Their father was John Cadwalladr Evans b. 29.10.1857 in Dolgellau and their mother was Jane (Inglesby) m. 1891 in Cape Town. But who Billy was is a mystery.

The Common Room / Lawrence Lovett Turner
« on: Saturday 03 September 22 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me to find out what happened to Lawrence Lovett Turner in Australia? There are apparently press clippings about him having deserted from the ship Rodney (perhaps as a prisoner) in 1885, see https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/78462871/person/32390084760/facts . I can't view the clippings as I don't have the required subscription. He was born on 03 Jul 1851 in Harrington, Northamptonshire, the son of William Lovett Turner and Mary Craft.

« on: Sunday 13 March 22 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am considering buying a couple of DNA test kits on special offer at the moment to take to South Africa in January 2023. Does anyone know if they have to be used within a certain time? Do they expire?
Thanks

The Common Room / Drawing your own digital family tree on Word, Publisher etc
« on: Tuesday 08 September 20 12:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm planning to write up some branches of my family tree for my grandchildren, using smaller snippets of trees with photos, information and illustrations to create something graphic, colourful and child friendly. Has anyone done this and which computer programme did you use?
Thanks
