Hi
I had a relative who worked at this place as a sister. I am trying to understand what this place was. I can see it perhaps helped people who were ill and there was a religion involved perhaps. I can see it was an oddfellow place but don't quite understand what it is.
Anyway help appreciated.
Thanks

Kent Lookup Requests / William Beer birth and shipmaster record
« on: Saturday 14 August 21 08:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am looking for information about William Beer native place of Dover who travelled to NSW, Australia onboard the Cecilia in 1837.

He was listed as a free man who married a convict Hannah McDonald in 1842 in Sydney NSW Australia stating he was 26 years old (born about 1816).

His marriage to her does not state his age or occupation. He had 6 children with Hannah: Ellen Olivia, Ellen Olivia, William John, Sarah Hannah, Ross Donnelly and Richard.

He served 3 days in gaol in 1854 for unpaid fines and passed away in 1856 also in Sydney NSW Australia with his age listed as 45 years old (born about 1811). No parents, occupation or cause listed on his burial record (no death certificates at this time).

His son Ross Donnellys marriage certificate states he was a shipmaster so am trying to track down a record if possible.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

Hi
Just looking to decipher this gaol record from 1836. Alicia and Hannah were sentenced together for being in possession of stolen goods. Alicia was given 12 months at Maryborough Gaol, Laois, Ireland (now called Portloaise I think) with hard labour 1 day a week solitary confinement (I dont know if this means was hard labour every day and 1 day a week solitary or hard labour 1 day a week and solitary confinement the rest?). Hannah was given 7 years transportation to NSW where she married William Beer had a few kids, and then he died and she married again and had 1 more. She died as Hannah Robinson in 1883. Quite a few articles on her in NSW as she was assaulted by both husbands it seems..

Just trying to decipher the name of the person who committed them and also the person and maybe trial name?

For me, it looks like:

By whom committed: Thomas Mofse Esq (esquire)

When and before whom tried: John Perkles Esq (esquire) Apt (appointed or appointment) Banister (I dont know what this is?)

Boris Sessions? or Bonis Delivers? I can see this second word which I think is sessions on the document alot but not sure I know they have assizes for English courts? Any information on Ireland courts in 1836 would be appreciated :)

Its the second row from the top.

Thanks
Stephanie.

The Common Room / Whats your favourite software to do genealogy??
« on: Thursday 24 September 20 12:01 BST (UK)  »
I am 33.
I have been doing my family history since about year 2000. I started off using Family Tree Marker version 8 (about year 2000). Over the years, I have changed from computers to laptops etc and havent had the capacity to reload the CD (as half my laptops haven't had a CD drive) and have used Ancestry (basically started again) to record my family history.

But this year I've been really getting stuck into it again and have noticed they're up to Family Tree Maker 2019 and am considering buying it as its compatible to Ancestry and I want to eventually write a book or 2 on my family history.

I have also discovered a software called Rootsmagic which is much cheaper and seems to do the same thing... keeping in mind I want to be able to create a book relatively easily once I'm happy with my tree :)

The main thing I miss that isn't on Ancestry is the ability to do reports so for example you can see whats missing amongst other things..

So am looking for recommendations on software please :)

Thanks
Stephanie.

Australia / William Beer travelled on the ship Cecilia before 1842
« on: Thursday 24 September 20 05:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My ancestor William Beer got permission to marry his convict wife Hannah McDonald 8 Nov 1842 in Sydney, NSW. It says he was a free man and came on the ship Cecilia.

I am unable to find this ship before this time and I was wondering if this forum could help me. I do not know from any certificates I have where he came from either.. but I presume it was either England or Scotland or maybe Ireland?

He died in 1856 quite young and his wife married Frederick Robinson in 1856 shortly after William died. I do not have a death certificate all thats available is a burial record. It has no details only when he was buried.

His son Ross Donnelly Beer's marriage certificate states that William was was shipmaster so possibly he could have been driving the ship?? He was a waterman and a farmer..

Any help very much appreciated.

Westmeath / Charles Golding born about 1815 Westmeath Ireland
« on: Thursday 24 September 20 05:35 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the birth of Charles Golding between April and August 1815 in Westmeath Ireland. Parent are (from his death certificate) Charles Golding and Mary Murray.
Also looking for their marriage or any other children.

Charles Golding was convicted 1840 in Cavan, Ireland and sentenced to 10 years transportation to NSW, Australia for cow stealing. He spent about a week in Kilmainham Prison in Dublin before coming over on the King William ship.

He got his ticket of leave in 1845 and Certificate of Freedom in 1850 and presumed to have married Elizabeth Cullen (nee Hill) in 1850 in Queanbeyan NSW. However their marriage registration cannot be found anywhere on NSW BDM website. Various certificates say they married St Marys Sydney, Queanbeyan and also Maitland NSW but cannot figure it out.

He had 6 children with Elizabeth. These children were born in Sydney area. He died in 1879 and buried in a now dyfunct cemetery known as Coopers Flat with his wife Elizabeth.

Any help much appreciated.

Stephanie.
