Northamptonshire / Hazelwood House, The Hayway, Rushden - The Groome family
« on: Monday 22 June 09 12:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone know Rushden well?  I am researching the family of Groome who lived at Hazelwood on The Hayway in Rushden in the early 20th century.  I have found them on the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the area if they could tell me if Hazelwood still exists.

Also, if any one is connected to the Groome family, would love to hear from you.  George Groome was a Shoe Manuafacturer and had four daughters but no sons, he went by the nickname of Gusty Groome!  My researches are at an early stage, so any info welcome.

Ayrshire / Burial lookup James Caldwell - Kilbernie
« on: Monday 18 August 08 14:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Has anyone access to MIs for Kilbernie parish, who could look to see if there is one for James CALDWELL, he was born in 1765 and was married to Margaret Barclay.  He's not on the 1841 census, so I guess he must have died by then, his son William was a weaver, and I believe that was James' occupation as well.

Many thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Hampstead Cemetery
« on: Sunday 06 April 08 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does any one have access to this book?

The good grave guide to Hampstead Cemetery, Fortune Green, London - published by the Camden History Society in 2000

I've tried their website, but it's not working.

If anyone has access to this or any Hampstead Cemetery monumental inscriptions, I'm trying to find the inscription for

James Wilson 1831 - 1906 - he was Chief Engineer to the Egyptian Government and he died in Hampstead in 1906 and was buried in the cemetery - according to an article on Hampstead Cemetery I found on wikipedia, it says

..., the tomb of James Wilson ('Wilson Pasha'), Chief Engineer to the Egyptian Government (1875-1901), executed in red marble and also found in the eastern section, has a striking Egyptian look to it.

I'll be in London for the WDYTYA show in May, but will only have a spare hour or so to visit the cemetery, how easy is it to find graves there?

Thanks

Dorset Lookup Requests / Robert Parker - census 1851/1861 lookup please
« on: Sunday 04 December 05 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
Here's one to get the grey cells going - I've had no luck, so am hoping fresh eyes might help.

Robert Parker born in 1847 in Bridport, Dorset (freebmd has him registered in Sep 1847).  I can't find him on either the 1851 or 1861 census (as yet, don't know his parents names - am sending for the certificate) - in 1851, he should be about 4 and in 1861 about 14 - I have him in the censuses from 1871 onwards - when he has moved to Hampshire, Surrey & Sussex, but not the earlier ones.

Anyone help.

Thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Northcliffe Convalescent Home - Filey
« on: Sunday 24 July 05 13:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to find any information, however small on the Northcliffe Convalescent Home in Filey.  My mother was there sometime in 1945 recovering I think from kidney stone problems, I have a photograph of the place and one of her and a group of people who were there at the same time as her.  I belive the convalescent home was something to do with the Printer's union, mam worked for Hull Printers from 1939 (when she left school) throughout the war until she married in 1946.  Her maiden name was Muriel Singleton - sadly she died in 1997, so I can't ask her any more questions.

Northcliffe itself is still there today, it has been developed into separate apartments, but the gardens are now open to the public and I often sit there when we visit.

If anyone knows anything at all about the convalescent home, however small, I would be interested in finding out.

Many thanks

HI

If anyone has the index for 1851 for Greywell near Odiham in Hampshire, would you be willing to look up the following?

James WHITE aged between 5 and 10, father George WHITE.

George was a labourer in 1866 when James married, no age for James given on marriage cert, but from other censuses would be born between 1841 and 1846.

Thanks

Kent / Brick wall Ethelbert Sayers, Herne Bay, Kent
« on: Wednesday 29 December 04 19:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My 3xgreat grandfather was Ethelbert Peter Sayers, born in about 1821 in Herne Bay in Kent.  According to his marriage certificates his father was Austin Sayers, a farmer.  I've also seen the name recorded as Sayer, Sair, Saires and other variations.

Ethelbert or Peter as he was sometimes known, was a Grimsby fishing captain, and married his first wife in Grimsby in 1838.  I have a very full picture of his life from this time, but know nothing of his origins.

Would anyone be able to check the Herne Bay parish register for a baptism about 1820?  Or does anyone recognise this name, or family.  Would really like to break down this brick wall.

Many thanks

Cumberland / Singleton from Low Eskholme, Muncaster
« on: Thursday 12 August 04 22:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm researching my mother's Singleton ancestors, and have found the earliest member, William Singleton was born in 1777 in Muncaster, Cumberland.  From what I've been able to find out, he was a farmer at Low Eskholme near Muncaster and was also Overseer of the Poor in Muncaster & Birkby in 1810.  His wife was Hannah and they had at least one child, also named William born in 1801.  This William married Ann and had five children, including my great great grandfather, another William, born in 1836.  The family had moved to Liverpool by the 1851 census and my great grandfather Christopher Chapman Singleton was born in Liverpool in 1863, he married Mary Alice Fogg in 1890, and my grandfather John Ernest Singleton was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancasher in 1901.

I would be very interested in finding anyone else researching these Singletons.  My grandfather was one of 10 children, and other names I knwo are, James, Norman, Gilbert and Chris.

United States of America / Chicago Marriage
« on: Wednesday 28 July 04 21:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My husband's grandfather was born in Chicago in 1910, I have a copy of his baptismal certificate stating, John Patrick Hosty was born on 31 July 1910 and baptised on 31 July 1910 at St Elizabeth's Church, Chicago.  His father was John Hosty and his mother Mary Kate Burke.

I would like to try and find John and Mary Kate's marriage certificate if possible.  Mary Kate Burke emigrated to Chicago through Ellis Island in 1906 - I believe John Hosty went there sometime in the early 1890s.

Any suggestions on how to trace certificates in Chicago - Mary Kate and her son returned the UK in 1915 after the death of her husband, and she married again in Durham, Uk.
