Yorkshire (West Riding) / St. Johns Churchyard Wakefield
« on: Sunday 05 September 21 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what happened to the burial ground at the church?  A circa 1900 photo which I saw 10 or so years ago showed a vibrant cemetery with large memorials and lots of upright stones.  Now only a handful and few in the ground.

I sent the church warden an email he didn't know, the Museum/Library no idea and the Heritage or local Council haven't responded.

Did they remove these for safety reasons?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Ship Name
« on: Friday 30 April 21 19:49 BST (UK)  »
Struggling to figure out the Ship name on the first line.  It would be a Coastguard vessel.  I looked at the Rootsweb Ship List but see nothing that fits this scribble. This document is when he switched to the RN after completing his 10 years with the Coastguard.

Thank you.

Lanarkshire / Walter Stone and Janet Dean
« on: Thursday 15 October 20 23:09 BST (UK)  »
Walker was b 1849 in Grinstead, Sussex.  He retired from the Army, served in Afghanistan.  His first wife Euphemia Cameron (my line) was born and raised in Duirinish (Skye).  They were both at Smithston in Old KD  Walter a clerk and Effy a housemaid.  Were they employees or inmates is the unknown and will remain as such until that COVID thing goes away.  They married in 1884 at Manse in Gourock and settled Glasgow.  In 1888 Effy dies of an abdominal tumour.  After this Walter is no where to be found until….

1901 when Walter 52 appears in Glasgow at 60 Milton St. with Janet his wife age 38 who was born in Kilwinning.  They are both employed as glass packers.  Then in 1902 Walter dies of TB.  On his death reg it states he is a an Army Pensioner (verified); #1 Effy Cameron spouse (verified) and #2 Janet Dean (not verified).  The one thing that bothers me is Janet was the informant yet being a recent bride one would think she would have known at least his mother/father’s given name but apparently not.

Found a Janet (age 29 and unmarried) in Kilwinning in the 1891 Census living with parents James and Janet (Hopkins) and two other younger family members a Mary (18) daughter, a Janet (granddaughter) age 4 born Glasgow but this not her.  This one married James Neilson in 1887 and died in 1941.  I found no other Janet that fits.

Perhaps Janet and Walter were simply cohabitants or they married outside of Scotland but so far I have been unable to locate them.  Fresh eyes always welcome.

Dead centre Elizabeth Brown...it does say "future spouse" correct?

And if it does how can the recently deceased have a future spouse or does this have another meaning in this context.

Thank you.

This is from an 1875 marriage at Stein in Waternish both were from there and both lived on Harris.  She was the schoolmistress on Scarp and he a merchant at the attached which I cannot find.  I would assume it would be close to Scarp but it appears not.

Thanks,

New Zealand Completed Requests / Mabel Lever 1879-?
« on: Friday 03 July 20 18:53 BST (UK)  »
Continuing with my stumbling through Papers Past, I came across another surprise, Mabel Lever wife of Robert Stewart Muirhead (Hutt/Wellington bunch), filed for divorce in 1921 which would explain why I never found her death.  She was born 1879 in Yorkshire, her family emigrated to Australia and she m Robert S Stewart there in 1902, had one child there in 1903, then they emigrated to Nz and had 3 more.

Thinking she perhaps remarried there are two marriages; one in 1925 where a Mabel Muirhead married Harold William Carter. The second to Charles Rosen as Mabel Lever but it is not her, she would have been to old to have children.

Before I spring for the Carter marriage was it allowed in Nz to register the marriage under your former spouse name rather than your birth name?

Thank you.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Muirhead - East Taieri
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 21:38 BST (UK)  »
I was trolling Papers Past looking for filler on family near Auckland and stumbled across a missing family who left Scotland mid 1800's. I have them travelling to Australia but never found any traces.

The 31 Jan 1936 Obit in the Otago Daily Times for Robert Muirhead is quite informative but now I am in search for records which I should be able to find from past experience.  But what I will need assistance with is East Taieri Cemetery Burials, specifically, Muirhead and Waddell pre 1936.

Thank you.
