Census and Resource Discussion / Missing 1911
« on: Sunday 01 September 13 15:18 BST (UK)  »
I've tried everything but it seems that I have two missing children on the 1911 census, I know they were alive then.  Any ideas as to why two toddlers would be missing?  If they were staying with relatives, would they not be included in their household census return?

Any ideas, thoughts would be gratefully received.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Help to find brothers in 1911 census please
« on: Sunday 01 September 13 14:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping that someone will cast a fresh pair of eyes over the 1911 census for me.  I'm looking for the following boys..

Stanley Willshaw born 1908, Lancashire/Manchester
Alexander Willshaw born 1910 Lancashire/Manchester

Mother, Jane Willshaw born 1880, is listed as a visitor in the Robinson household.

Father, George Willshaw born 1880 is listed living with his father Enoch Willshaw.

Many thanks

Is anyone researching the Barbers and Wilshaws, mainly from Cheddleton, Endon and Leek?  If so I would love to hear from you  :)

Derbyshire / Pooles Cavern - allways ask
« on: Monday 05 May 08 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Just thought I would share my afternoon experiences.

My ancestors address in some census material is described as 'Pools Cavern' and in others as Green Lane.  I never actually thought that they lived in the cavern but have been a little bemused as to where they actually lived.

I visited the cavern today and took lots photos of a couple of 17th century derelict cottages which are next to the cavern and not actually on Green Lane.  I thought that perhaps this was a good bet and although unlikely to be my actual ancestors seat they probably lived in something very similar.

As I'm musing over this I noticed that my 6 year old had wandered off to a farm behind the cottages and the owner was letting her feed the hens.  I went over and started chatting and what a hive of info the old chap turned out to be.  He pointed out where the Lime pits were and told me that many poor families lived in pits there.  As my G G Grandad was a lime stone quarry man this could be an option.

So, my moral is never be afraid to ask...or  borrow my 6 yr old to make the introductions for you  ;)

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1891 look up + advice pls - Lover
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 19:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I would be most gratefull if someone could have a look for the following for me...

I have George Lover and wife Louisa (nee Willshaw) in the 1881 census

They are living in Sutton the Hill (RG11 Piece 2753 Folio 17)

I think I may have them in 1901, living in Knutsford, now with children (RG13 Piece 3330 Folio 31)

I can't find them in 1891 however there is a damaged piece of census with a Lover family on it but it doesn't seem to fit with my family (RG12 Piece 592  Folio 2)

What do you think?

Many thanks for your time and help  :)

The Lighter Side / How many people in one house?
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 21:54 BST (UK)  »
I suspect that this thread must have come up before.  If so I apologise.

I was looking at one of my distant ancestors census returns, there are 12 people living in a house consisting of 4 rooms.  So, I presume the house was a two up two down.

I live in an old terraced house with my hubby and daughter and we are busting out at the seams.

How on earth did they cope and where did they all sleep ???

Lancashire / A Good factual book
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 19:39 BST (UK)  »
I have bought my Mum a book, Clayton & Openshaw by Jill Cronin and Frank Rhodes.  It's full of photos, memories and factual information.  It's brought a lot of memories back to my Mum.

I wonder if anyone has any other recommendations for books relating to this area?

Many thanks

Fiona  :)

Hi, I'm not going to attempt to try and paste the original onto this small square as I know I will fail  ::)

So, I'm hoping that a rootschatter will have a look at this for me and give me their thoughts..I'm also trying not to hit the copyright editor's radar, so here goes...

Chorlton, Ardwick, Manchester, RG13, 3679, page 6.

I'm interested to know your thoughts on John Drangle aged 7

Do you think he has been adopted by the head of the family or by Selina Critchlow (mis-transcribed as cirrchlow)?

Also, any ideas on what his name actually is as I don't think it reads 'Drangle' but I can't quite make it out.

Thank you for your time and help  :)

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1851-Wilshaw-Cheddleton/Endon/Stanley-pls help
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I would be very gratefull if a kind person could have a look for the following family for me in 1851 before I pull my hair out  ???

Joseph willshaw/Wilshaw born 1821 in Cheddleton

Anne Wilshaw -wife-born 1826

George Wilshaw - son - born 1849

Joseph Wilshaw (born 1851 so unsure if he will be on the census)

I have a sneaking suspicion that they will be ling at 'Black Bank' but try as I might I cannot find this in the enumeration districts.  They are living at Black Bank in 1861 and I think he may have inherited/took over the farm after his father died in 1850.  I just can't find it.... :(

Many thanks for your time and help  :)
