Montgomeryshire / Mary Ellen Lewis b April1842 in Guilsfield area.
« on: Saturday 25 February 23 01:43 GMT (UK)  »
One of my rellies named Mary Ellen Lewis b in April 1842 & bap 18 April in Guilsfield d/o James Lewis of Broniarth, innkeeper & Mary of Pentre Broniarth Upper who married in Guilsfield in 1836.  Mary Ellen was their first child but I have never been able to find her living with them.   From Family Trees on Ancestry I found her married & living in the US.

According to the 1900 US Federal Census she immigrated to the US in 1848 & she would have only been 6 years old at the time. I've searched passenger lists etc & cannot find her emigrating at all.  At 6 years of age she wouldn't have gone alone would she & why??  It also said she'd lived in the US 52 years so therefore her given age of 58 would be correct.

On the 1920 US census it says she immigrated in 1860 & naturalized in 1890. Have searched but can't find trace of these either.

However she married on 4 December 1864 in Knox, Ohio to a man named Morton Hugh WILLITTS, had several children & the last one was named Edward Cureton Willitts & this really caught my eye as this Mary Ellen's grandmother was Mary Ann Cureton & she had a father & a brother both named Edward Cureton.  So I'm pretty sure this is the Mary Ellen I was searching for BUT can anyone shed light onto her emigrating in 1848 when she was 6???   Any suggestions please as this seems to be quite a conundrum.
Thanks to anyone who replies with any info.

Cheshire / Thomas Boswell m Rachel Firat, Sirat or Pirat?? 1773 in Tarvin.
« on: Wednesday 13 January 21 21:18 GMT (UK)  »
I can't go any further back in my Tree than this couple above as I can't really read the wife's surname.  Any ideas anyone please?    Also I cannot determine where either of them were born as they had both died before the 1841 census which at least would have told me if they were born in Cheshire.
Thomas' birth date was established from his age at death, aged 79 in 1825 & died as Thomas Boswell of Kelsall.  He married Rachel 25 April 1773 in Tarvin as Thomas Betwizel. Rachel died in 1803 as Rachel Boswell of Tarvin.    They had 5 children I believe.  Sarah born 1773 as Sarah Betwezel dau/of Thomas & Rachel of Kelsall, James Betwesel 1775 but signed his name on his marr cert as James Boswell. Then Thomas 1780, on his marr cert as Thomas Barswell [probably sounded like this when he said it??] but could write & signed it as Boswell. Then Mary b 1783 on birth cert as Bettweasel & lastly Hannah b 1788 as Betweasel.
Also can anyone explain please why Boswell was written in so many different spellings, apart from possibly pronunciation & minister' s spelling???
Any suggestions would be gratefully received to any of this post.    Thanks.     Amberly

Firstly please could someone explain to me why intent to marry papers were written up?  Also the 2 people concerned seemed to be only 16 at the time, could this have been the reason?   They did marry in fact on year later in 1781. Also is there somewhere were one can look these up to read?
Thank you to anyone who can help.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / seeking info on Francis Reese Roberts b 1923 Wallasey
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 01:15 BST (UK)  »
I believe the gentleman above is the son of Francis & Harriet Roberts & was born to them in 1923 in Wallasey.    I've been trying to find a marriage for him, however he may not have married?  He died in 2003 & I thought if I could find his grave it would probably indicate his possible wife & even children, however I can't find his or his parents' grave.  They are possibly all buried together if I could just find them??  His father Francis died in Wallasey in 1959 & his mother Harriet died in 1961 also in Wallasey.

Also on his parents' marriage cert for 1916 it says his father was a driver in the 57th West Lancs Royal Field Artillery.  Could anyone tell me please how to look up for his applicable papers?

Thanks to anyone who can help find any of the above info.

I live in Canada & will be coming over to the area in mid to late Oct & would love to be able to go & find & take photos of the grave or graves.

Another brick wall!   I'm searching for my grandfather's brother Frank.  He had 6 brothers & I've found all the others but Frank is proving very difficult.    He was born on 18th Dec 1887 in Guilsfield, Montgomeryshire. I have a photo of him with his wife & on the back it says Mr & Mrs F Roberts, home on leave 6 June 1917 & he is in his uniform.  The photo was taken in New Brighton, nr Liverpool.  I've found him on the 1891 census & 1901 & 1911.  By 1911 he was boarding with the Williams family at 5 Manor Rd, Liscard, Cheshire, 24 & unmarried. The Williams family were no relation to us to my knowledge.
I've scrolled through MANY Frank Roberts for his marriage between 1911 & 1917 when the photo was taken but cannot find anywhere telling me who his father was.  He was in fact Charles Edward Roberts b 21 Dec 1851 but bap 1852 but cannot pin Frank down without finding his father mentioned to be sure I have the correct guy.
I also know he had children as his older brother who lived in Liverpool, Robert Whitley Roberts b 5 Mar 1880 & I knew of as Uncle Bob, left money in his will to them when he died in 1972 aged 92, but they were only called Frank's children, & no further info on them.
I have a feeling, don't know why, he could have married Harriett Reese in Birkenhead in 1916, & was a bus driver, or Nellie C Gough in Chester in 1914 & was a house painter & decorator.
I really have nothing to go on apart from this photo.   I never heard my Grandfather mention him or his family.
Can anyone please tell me how to find his Father's name without sending for MANY marriage certs?
Thanks to anyone with ideas.

Denbighshire / Thomas Rogers 1832, born where? died 1859 in Brymbo.
« on: Wednesday 19 June 19 14:24 BST (UK)  »
I just can't sort out who Thomas was.  His marr cert said he was 21 when he married in 1853 so he must have been born in 1832.  He said he was living in Southsea when he married & his Father's name was John, a labourer.   He married Ann Davies 1830/1886 born & died in Brymbo.  Because he was married in 1853 & died in 1859 I obviously can't find him on a census when he was married so don't know where he was born.
The witnesses at the wedding were Robert & Henrietta nee Harrop Rogers.  Henrietta was Ann's cousin. Ann's mother was Mary Ann Colley & Henrietta's was Elizabeth Colley, Mary Ann's sister.
Now Ann Davies was born deaf & dumb so I imagine she only had a limited range of people she knew & met so it made sense to me, maybe incorrectly, that Thomas was related in some way to Robert Rogers, her cousin's husband.  Robert's Father was also named John & he had many children as he married twice but the only Thomas I could find for him was from his 2nd wife Elizabeth Ellis & born in 1851,so too old.  There were of course many Rogers associated with this family but I just can't link him with any of them.   So who was he??
Can anyone sort this out for me please, or give me any clues how next to go about it??
I've looked on the 1841 & 1851 census for either Thomas or John his Father in Southsea to no avail as Southsea on the marriage cert could just have been where Thomas was living at the time of his marriage & not where his father lived.
Blank wall again!  Help!

Denbighshire / Robert Thomas married Catherine Jones
« on: Sunday 06 August 17 22:02 BST (UK)  »
I'm really stuck trying to sort out where & when the above couple were married.  I can't find them on the 1841 census but on the 1851 Catherine is already widowed, she's 45 & says she was b in Pentrevoelas,  She has 3 children living with her, David aged 16 b Bersham [I found I believe his bap on 17 Mar 1833 in Bersham saying son of Robert Thomas & Catherine Jones] then Jane who is my 2 x gt grandmother aged 14 b Brymbo [her bap says 6 Mar 1836 Wrexham to Robert & Catherine Thomas] then Elizabeth aged 2 b Broughton & they were living in Broughton.   Since Catherine was already widowed in 1851 & Elizabeth was 2 he must have died sometime between 1849 & 1851 I guess??  I found a burial of a Robert Thomas aged 72 on 10 Dec 1849 in Brymbo which seems to fit the bill but he seems to have been much older than Catherine like 30 years??  This may well have been so but I can't find a birth for anyone in 1777 which seems to fit the bill.   She could have been his 2nd or 3rd wife I suppose??   I'm not sure where he was born either since I can never find him on a census.
Any suggestions please as to where to look now?
Thanks to anyone who could help.

Europe / Where to find Belgian B, M & D's??
« on: Friday 07 July 17 00:55 BST (UK)  »
I haven't searched for anyone in Belgium before & so don't really know what sites are available.   Is anyone able to direct me to some please?    I'm looking for someone named Meinertzhagen who was born in Antwerp in 1892.    He married my gt grandmother's sister in Wales in 1919 but he didn't appear to die in the UK, she did & their son did but I'm assuming he went back to Antwerp after she died in 1955 as I can't find a death for him.
Can anyone help please?   Thanks so much, Amberly.
