Armed Forces / Copyright on reproduction
« on: Sunday 15 October 17 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I have an image of a 1930s army record which was properly obtained by my distant cousin who is a grandson of the deceased individual.

What are the rules governing publishing a page of this record in a magazine? I can't find anything on the MoD's website other than how to order them.

Looking to trace the Parfitt family from Coventry

James CE Parfitt (1875-1953)
Alice Parfitt née Guerins (1890-1960)
Sons:
James Lewis Parfitt born 1918
Joseph Parfitt born 1929 - FindMyPast suggests a marriage to Glenda Thompson in 1958 but I haven't ordered this yet.

I found the parents on the 1939 Register but the other records are closed.

Armed Forces / Naval Records newbie
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 19:11 BST (UK)  »
I have a death cert from Dublin 1900 of a George Russell.  His occupation is recorded as "groom, naval pensioner".  He died in a regular hospital aged 40.

If he is the man I think he is, then his wife was a Margaret Ure.  There's no record of their marriage in normal records in Ireland or the UK.  There's a son, also George, no birth record in either country either.  She recorded herself as married rather than widowed in 1901 but the return has several confirmed errors on it.  Widow on 1911.

How do I go about getting hold of this man's naval record?  It doesn't look like there's enough to go on at this stage.

I'd appreciate any advice.

One Name Studies: T to Z / Ure (Ireland 1800-present)
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 15:44 BST (UK)  »
I'm working on the Ure surname in Ireland - anywhere on the island.  Not against finding earlier records but the survival rate for records of ordinary people in Ireland before 1800 isn't great.

Ireland / IGRS 80th Anniversary Archive
« on: Tuesday 12 July 16 15:26 BST (UK)  »
The Irish Genealogical Research Society is celebrating the 80th anniversary this year and are looking for submissions to a collection of ancestral stories.

You don't need to be a member and you can make more than one submission but each story should focus on just one Irish-born ancestors (whether he or she subsequently emigrated or not).

The best stories will be published in an ebook but all will be kept in a special archive at their library (currently housed at the Society of Genealogists).

Further details and how to submit are herehttp://www.irishancestors.ie/?page_id=7271.

Took me a long time to decide which ancestor to choose...although now I have thought of a second interesting one.

Louth / John Ure of Dundalk
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking into John Ure of Seatown, Dundalk.

He appears in various directories as a county director of the Provincial Bank of Ireland in 1840s/1850s.  He's also on electoral registers in the 1830s at that address and in Pigotts 1824.

His death would seem to be reported:
Death reported in Cork Examiner 29/12/1852
“Sept 25, in Dublin, after returning from Cork, John Ure Esq of Dundalk”
Also reported in Dublin Evening Mail as 23rd Sept (27/9/1852 paper)

I'm hoping to connect him to my ancestor Alexander Ure (of Dublin, born approx 1826), a clerk whose father was called John.  A possible brother is the fabulously named Ebenezer Ure (a civil servant, also appearing in prison registers on FindMyPast for assaulting his wife and child).  Both of these men lived in Dublin.

The family was CoI.  I have a note that there's a memorial inscription in St Nicholas's, Dundalk but haven't been able to find further details.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Eneclann is involved.  I wonder does this mean they won't be involved with Origins anymore.

Dublin / Birth Peter Reilly 9/7/1882
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 20:52 BST (UK)  »
So I'm hoping someone else might have better luck with the LDS than I am having.  I've got an exact birth date from an Irish army record for my great-grandfather Peter Reilly of 9/7/1882.  He lists his birth parish as St Mary's, Dublin (which is the Pro-Cathedral -?) and he's definitely Catholic.  I know from his marriage certificate in 1910 that his father was called Thomas and his address at the time of marriage was 9 McCall's Cottages.  I have a good candidate on the 1901 census but I'm really looking to confirm the birth details.  This is my only great-grandparent that I have no further back details on so I'm delighted to have this new clue.

Ireland / Advice on NI research post 1922
« on: Monday 11 April 11 16:44 BST (UK)  »
So I'm helping a distant cousin in Australia to find out what happened her grandparents.  The only knowledge she has is that her father was 3 or 4 when they both died (unknown if together or separately) and that he was subsequently raised by an aunt in Dublin.  It would be approx 1931.

I can't find them in the Republic's death indexes on the LDS, though it is a little unreliable at the moment.  The people involved were John and Georgina Coulter, her maiden is Walters (her brother is my great-grandfather).  I can't find a death with the right name for Georgina.  Since Coulter is often an NI name, I wondered if they possibly died there.

Is findmypast's indexes the best way to search for them there?
