Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / David Thomson
« on: Friday 10 November 17 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
Looking to find the death date for David Thomson.

This is what I know about him.
David was born 1790 in Edinburgh. He married Mary Ann, surname, date and place unknown. Mary Ann was born in England.
They had two known children, Mary Cecelia Thomson born 3 March 1939, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia; and Georgiana Hawkes Thomson born 25 Apr 1842, Eldon, Clarence Town and Dungog, New South Wales, Australia.

On the 1861 census, the family are living in St Sampson, Guernsey, Channel Islands.
David is 71 yr old, his wife Mary is aged 55 (born in England). Their 2 daughters are with them on the census.
I haven't been able to view the image on Ancestry as it doesn't appear to show, so unsure what Davids occupation would show as.

On the 1871 census, they are living at 3 Cameron Place, Rouquettes, St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands.
On this census, David is listed as an 81 yr old Surgeon RN (presumably retired from Royal Navy), his wife Mary Ann is 65. Both daughters are with them, and unmarried.

Mary Ann died on 1 October 1877 at 3 Cameron Place, Rouquettes, and was a widow when she died.

So that helps to narrow down Davids death to between 1871 - 1877.

Is there anyone who could help me find out when he died, presumably in Guernsey, and where he may be buried.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Scotland / Finding previous Wills
« on: Friday 15 September 17 19:26 BST (UK)  »
I have downloaded my 7 x great grandfathers last will and testament from Scotland People.

He died 1803, in Leith, Midlothian.

His last will and testament (TT at Edinburgh Commissary Court 1805) makes reference to a previous last will and testament lodged on 16 April 1787 at Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

Why would his will be lodged there? Was it customary for mariners to have their wills lodged there?

Is there any way that I could locate the original will of 1787, to see what the content of that will was?

I have tried searching the National Archives around that date (1787), but when I purchased it, it was the later will of 1805.

Any advise how to follow this up would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Midlothian / Leith burials
« on: Friday 18 August 17 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone please point me in the direction of who to contact to find out where a person would have been buried, who owns the lair, and who else is buried in the lair?

My 5 x great grandfather, Lawrence Skene, ship owner, died 21 AUG 1838 • Albany Street, North Leith. I have the OPR for his death which states he is buried "In front of Thomson's stone"
My 5 x great grandmother, Johanna Thomson, died 26 FEB 1851 • 56 Bridge Street, Leith North. Again I have the OPR which states her as being buried "In front of Thomson's stone".

Lawrence and Johanna's marriage (06 Nov 1790 • Saint Cuthbert's, Edinburgh) list her father as John Thomson, mariner.
Their daughter, Jean, and several of her children are all in OPR recorded as being buried "In front of Captain Thomson's stone".

I don't have any further information on Captain Thomson, or which burial ground he is buried in.

Jean's husband, James Bell Dow, solicitor, died 19 Oct 1854 • Cholera Hospital, South Leith, and his OPR states he is buried in the New Ground. At time of death he lived at Hillhousefield, Leith.

What cemetery would be the New Ground in 1854? And who would hold the cemetery records?

Many thanks in advance

Angus (Forfarshire) / 1901 census lool up please
« on: Monday 19 April 10 13:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Im hoping that someone may have access to 1901 census and be kind enough to do look ups for me.

I am looking for
Alexander Scott Dow, who would be approximately 21 year old. He may possibly be living at 14 Fords Lane, Dundee, possibly with parents George and Johan / Jean. Alexanders occupation may be railway engine stoker.  keen to know who else lived with him.

Also, would like a look up for Barbara Rennie on 1901 census.
Barbara would be aged approx 20 years old. Would like to know her birth place and with whom she is living. In 1905 she was living at 22 Union Place, Dundee. Her parents, Andrew and Catherine were deceased by 1905, so hoping they might be alive in 1901, to find out their approx ages, and where they came from, also who else lived with them.

If they can be found on earlier census records also, that would be a big bonus.

Many thanks in advance

Lanarkshire / 1861 census look-up please
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 01:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am hoping some kind person may have access to the 1861 census, and be kind enough to do a look up for me
the person I am looking for is Duncan McDermid, with his wife Mary, and daughter Catherine who should be aged approx 5
According to Catherine McDermids marraige certificate she would have been born circa 1857, but i have been unable to locate her birth certificate.
Duncan McDermaid married Mary Fletcher in the Gorbals district in 1852, and that is all i know about them, so I am taking a very safe guess that they would both have been aged 16-22 at time of marraige, and therefore somewhere between the ages  of 26-32 at time of the 1861 census. I have no idea where they were born.

on census records it could be spelled as McDiarmid, McDermid, McDermott or something close to that.

Any help would be very much appreciated
regards Gillian

Lanarkshire / Duncan McDermid and Mary Fletcher info needed
« on: Wednesday 05 August 09 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for any information about Duncan McDermid who married Mary Fletcher on 15 Aug 1852 in the Gorbals district of Glasgow. I have the OPR entry for the marraige.
I know they had one daughter Catherine who was born circa 1856/57 according to her marraige certificate to Hugh Mckinnon on 21 August 1877, Greenock.  From the marraige certificate i know that Duncan McDermid was deceased by 1877, and that Mary Fletcher was alive.  Also on the certificate Marys surname was given as Fridget, although it states Fletcher on Catherines death certificate in 1892 in Greenock, and McDermid is recorded as McDermot.
i have Catherine and her family on the 1881 census which states she was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

What i would like to know is if anyone else has Duncan McDermid/McDermot(t) and Mary Fletcher on their tree, and who, if any other children they had. I havent been able to locate them on any census records. A big bonus would be finding an 1855 birth certificate for any children they may have had, but havent had any such luck.

any help would be much appreciated.
