Lancashire Lookup Requests / William Vale 1893 Prestwich Marriage Lookup
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 01:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi -

Wondering if anyone has resources close at hand to provide more info on the marriage of William Vale to Emily Russell, 4th Q 1893, Prestwich registration district.

I've checked the Lancashire parish register images on FamilySearch.org - no luck with the available parishes. Nothing on the LAN-OPC website, either.

William and Emily were in London before and after the marriage - I'm at a bit of a loss why they ended up in Lancashire.  This is the only marriage for a William Vale to Emily Russell that I've been able to find, however.

Many thanks in advance,

Meredith

Armed Forces / Merchant Navy CR10 & CR2 Questions
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 02:00 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with the interpretation of a CR10 card?

On the front gives: No of identity certificate, name, rating, date and place of birth, nationality, nationality of father.

On the back gives: Three ship identification numbers with corresponding dates and the text "No photos.  See RS1."  Possibly "RSI."

What does this code mean?

If I look up the crew lists for these ships (some of which exist, I know), what sort of information would they tell me - name and the specific date range the sailor was aboard the ship?

Is there any way to correlate this CR10 card to a later CR2 card?  The CR2 card has a "Dis A No," name, and ship identification numbers with corresponding dates.

Specifically - is there any database that links the CR10 "no of identity certificate" with the CR2 discharge number?

I am trying to determine if the CR10 and CR2 cards belong to my great grandfather James McDuff Robertson.  There are some convincing arguments to be made in the case of each, although some inconsistencies that I'd like to shed more light on.  A way to correlate "Jas Robertson" to "J McDuff" would be extremely useful.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Swan in Wickham
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 03:45 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone happen to have access to the book:

Hants. parish registers and monumental inscriptions / G. L. Cokayne. -- P. 149-158. -- [1889?].

I am interested in the records for the Swan family in Wickham.  Will just order the films, if not.

I believe they attended St. Nicholas - I believe two Swan tombs were moved in 1781 when they added the south transept to the church.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating Help Please
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 03:34 BST (UK)  »
Would love assistance with dating these photographs, if possible.

There are no other markings on the photos - no studio name, no other writing. It appears that they might have been mounted in a scrapbook or picture frame mat and removed, as there are remnants of black paper glued onto the back, but only on the photo of the man.

On the woman's photo, the Gregorian death date is written twice (Sept. 7, 1921), and the Hebrew date is written in printed letters. In the man's photo, the Gregorian date is written once (Feb.1, 1920) and the Hebrew date is written in script.  The accuracy of the dates has been confirmed; 7 Sep 1921 does correspond to 4 Elul 5681 and 1 Feb 1920 does correspond to  12 Shevat 5680.

The photos may have been taken in St. Louis, Poland, or another location in the US.  The individuals did not die in St. Louis (my best guess), however.

May be husband and wife, brother and sister, or unrelated...

Thanks in advance.

World War One / WWI Royal Navy -> Merchant Navy
« on: Wednesday 01 June 11 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Looking for some insight into this research problem.

My great grandad James McDuff Robertson served in the Royal Navy from 31 Aug 1917 to May 1919.

He was born in Perthshire, Scotland in 1899 - I have a copy of his birth certificate.  His Royal Navy service record has his same date of birth but a year of 1898.

He appears on various documents from 1920-1922 as a "seaman."  He was in Glasgow on and off during this time period.  Family legend is that he was in the merchant navy - I have legal documents that refer to him being at sea extensively in the 1921 time range.

I've had Southampton search the CR1, CR2, and CR10 series for James Robertson.  There are three James Robertsons in the CR1 series.  One hit is an individual from Knockando (not Perthshire), b. 1898, 5 ft 8 in 3/4 (vs. 5 ft 5 in 3/4 on RN record), blue/brown/fair complexion matching on both.  It is stamped on the back w/ a year of 1922 and place of Glasgow.  I have the individual's signature, but none of the documents in my possession have a known match for comparison.

Is it within the realm of possibility this is a match?  Even with the off details?

Would it be likely that he had a career in the merchant navy for several years (at a minimum) but that he doesn't appear in the index cards?

Would there be any other resources to clarify his service in the merchant navy?

Thanks in advance for your help.  Please also tell me if there's a better section to post this query.

Hi -

My first post here, but have always been amazed at the work you do!

Would love some restoration, if possible, of this photo of Great Grannie Harriet with my father.

I have attached a file < 500Kb - here is a link to the larger version of the same photo:

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Rochefort Ball Marriage Lookup
« on: Thursday 24 March 11 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi -

I would be very grateful if anyone has a chance to look up:

Christopher Rochefort
Margaret H Ball
3rd quarter, 1915
Chapel en le Frith, Derbyshire
Vol. 7b, page 2025

Christopher should be born about 1894, the son of Julian John James Rocheford/Rochefort.  I have a candidate for Margaret in the 1901 census (will have access to the 1911 tonight).  Potentially the daughter of William and Alice Ball living in Ashover.  I'm most interested in finding the name and occupation of Margaret's father.

Thanks in advance!

Kent / Chemical Works Near Bexleyheath in 1920s
« on: Tuesday 04 January 11 15:06 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandparents were married at the Dartford register office in June 1921.

The groom, Albert Pratt, is listed as a "mixer at chemical works."  His home address is 5 Ash Place, Erith Rd, Bexleyheath.  The bride also resided in Bexleyheath prior to the marriage.

Any thoughts on how to find out more information about possible facilities or his employment at one?

Thanks in advance for your help!
