Travelling People / Olive Mary Stanley - relative of John Stanley/Ireland?
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been trying to identify John Stanley/Ireland for some time.  It is somewhat complicated because he used both Stanley and Ireland as his surname in different census returns. There are a couple of other (old) threads, one is here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=309819.0

I can find nothing on him before 1879, which is the baptism of his Olive, his first child at St John's, Walworth. He married Mary Jane Quigley in 1880. His father is listed as Zachariah Ireland (deceased) but I haven't found anything related to him. I have John Stanley's children's baptisms and later census returns.

Some internet searching turned up chat threads which mention Olive Mary Stanley married to Daniel Johnson.  Daniel and Olive are at 8 Park Row, Newington in 1881, same address as John Stanley and family (RG11 P549 F32 P58). Previously I had not made any connection between these two families.

However - I can't find a marriage record for Daniel Johnson and Olive Mary Stanley so I cannot confirm this information from the internet search.  I also cannot confirm any relationship between John Stanley and Olive Mary Stanley/Johnson, though it seems likely, particularly given he named his eldest Olive.

If anyone has any information, particularly on how we know Daniel Johnson married Olive Mary Stanley I would be very grateful.
I know that the RTFHS has Stanley histories, but I'm not sure if they would be any help to me here.

Thanks

Warwickshire Completed Lookup Requests / COMPLETE Albert Edward Lenton born c.1898
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to locate a birth registration or census entry for Albert Edward Lenton.

He married Beatrice Mary Nicholls on 19th March 1927 in Tamworth.† They both said they were 29 yrs old (but Iím wondering if he was making his age up).
His address was Hill Farm House, Mere Green, father Albert Hatton Lenton, gardener domestic.
Her address Rowton Cottage, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, father Charles Nicholls, green keeper.

Iíve had success with Beatrice, but canít find anything beyond speculation for Albert.† Thought his fatherís unusual middle name might help, but hasnít so far.
Any bright ideas for places to search, etc.?

Thanks

Scotland / The Scotsman Archive
« on: Tuesday 28 October 08 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a wealth of information on a newsworthy incident that a relative was caught up in.

Archive of The Scotsman newspaper 1817 to 1950.
http://edu.archive.scotsman.com/

This is a subscription service, but I would imagine that many libraries would have access.
I am happy to do lookups. Sorry, I no longer have access to the service.

The Common Room / Please help reading handwriting

Hi there

I'm trying to decipher something on the Charles Booth online archive.  What I'm looking at is here:

http://booth.lse.ac.uk/notebooks/b365/jpg/163.html

(I don't know if I'm allowed to copy the image).

There are just a couple of words that I can't read:

"Larissa St leading to Tisdall Place: very poor rough: windows bad, mess, all costers [something something] thieves: Larissa St rather worse than Tisdall Place"

Any ideas?
TIA

Surrey / Zachariah IRELAND, Walworth/Wandsworth
« on: Friday 13 June 08 13:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Zachariah (or Zackariah) Ireland is listed as the deceased father on John Ireland's (and Mary Jane Quigley's) marriage certificate in 1880, in Walworth St John's.

There is a possible death in Wandsworth 1861, but I can't find any birth or marriage records.  There are some possibles in 41/51/61 census.  I think it likely that mistranscriptions have occured every step of the way here.  Very difficult with no info to go on.  So before I launch into soul-destroying checking:

Anyone miraculously have info on/interest in this man?

Cheers

World War Two / NAAS - what does this mean please?
« on: Thursday 31 January 08 09:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have a relative's soldier service book from 1942.

It has all her personal details, then for 'approved society' it says N.A.A.S and a membership number.
Then for 'enlisted at' it says ATS for period of present emergency.
There is also a note which reads 'A&S Group 47C'.

Just wondered if some knowledgeable person could give me a hand, please.

The Common Room / 'All Our Yesterdays' - old TV programme - shipwreck?
« on: Monday 28 January 08 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
I'm clutching at straws here, but does anyone remember an episode of this programme which featured a ship which either ran aground or sank in the 1930s?†

The passenger ship was returning from Canada (or conceivably the US) and the passengers rowed to shore in lifeboats (I assume that was on this side of the pond).

I've tried endless shipping websites to no avail.† It doesn't help that I have only a vague date and no other details.† I'm aware that the NA might have records of incoming British nationals - but I'm hesitant about attempting to look at those (perhaps there are no records of these passengers - who knows what happened when they reached shore?).

For information, it was my grandmother who was on the ship.† Any info might help me to identify the ship and find out what happened.

Thanks
Jojo (hoping for a miracle† ;D)
