Lanarkshire / Adam Brown - Shotts - early 20th C
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 17:53 BST (UK)  »
I'm searching on behalf of an acquaintance..

.......
His name was Adam Brown and he was from Shotts in Lanarkshire. Not sure of his birth date but he definitely died before 1954 as that was when my grandparents met. He was married to Margaret and had 9 children, the youngest of whom was my grandpa, Thomas, born in 1926. We *think* he was a miner but are wondering if there are any records to show if he was also an athlete
........

the reason for the search? the original athlete on the Irn Bru label (pre 1922) was one Adam Brown of Shotts, and this lady is trying to find out if her Adam is THAT Adam

thanks in advance

Down / Help finding GGGrandfather - Robert Eadie Co Down 1825
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 11:23 BST (UK)  »
hi,  time to attack one of my brick walls.

my GG grandfather Robert EADIE is shown as born in Co Down, in abt 1825 (taking census, marriage and death certs into account

his parents (from marriage cert)
Robert EADIE ; a farmer
Mary EADIE (ne HANNAH)
Mary was deceased by the time of her sons marriage in 1855

Marriage was in 1855 to Catherine MCFARLANE b. abt1830 d. 28 Oct 1876
in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire,

Robert died 5 Nov 1878 at his residence, 175 Craighall Rd, Glasgow , he was a cattle feeder at Keppoch farm.

the census only gives him from "Ireland",though his marriage cert gives birth as, Co Down, (date unknown) and that is ALL I have to go on.

From a religious point of view the family would be protestant (if that helps in the search)

If anyone could assist in finding his birth, and possible date of travel to Glasgow, I'd be hugely appreciative.

thanks..

Lanarkshire / Lookup Request - Scottish Landowners 1873. John Stewart
« on: Friday 12 June 09 12:34 BST (UK)  »
As per the previous post, could someone with a subscription please tell me the details for the single entry for John Stewart Lanark in the Scottish Landowners records on familyrelatives.com?

many many thanks

Edited to add - I'm trying to work out if "my" John Stewart (1809-1887) owned the farm he was farming. If not, then the family moving wholesale into Glasgow a few years after his death (sometime after the 1891 census) makes more sense.

Lanarkshire / John Stewart 1881 - 1934 ? can't find death or 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 17:46 BST (UK)  »
yup, me again

my Great Grandfather is causing me problems, I have his birth and marriage records.
B 20 apr 1881    32 Glasgow Rd Rutherglen to William STEWART and Elizabeth STEWART (Ne CRAIG)

on the 1891 census at Greenleeshill farm (which, for anyone following my seach is no surprise)

Married Helen Watson BURNS on 5 Oct 1906 , his address is shown as 76 Horne St. His profession is shown as an Iron turner (journeyman).

in the 1901 census, the rest of the family ARE shown at 76 Horne St, but not John. (unless, as usual, I'm missing something obvious, again)

I've been told he died in 1934, but can't corroborate that and I cannot find a death cert on SP, due to the common nature of the name, (even just in my family we are littered with John Stewarts) in the search results, nothing QUITE matches.

So, if anyone could assist me in the search for him on the 1901 and/or the death cert, I'd be massively thankful.

(and this is just the Stewart side, I've my mother's side to come yet, and that takes me into England and to Co Down (so far))

Lanarkshire / Springburn/Dennistoun/St Rollox burials - which cemetery?
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 08:48 BST (UK)  »
Would burials in from around 1840-1940 have tended to be in Sighthill or elsewhere (Necropolis ? somewhere else?)

A large part of my family on both sides lived in Petershill Rd, Keppochhill Rd, and the surrounding areas, I've seen most of the death certificates, so I know place of death, what I'm not sure is how to start checking burials from this period and then which cemetery I should be searching.

me again,

Again linking to John Stewart of Greenleeshill Farm, Camuslang, his parents are given as William Stewart (farmer) and Helen Hamilton. (I've seen John's birth record and death certificate, both his parents were deceased by 1887)

John's siblings (ref the 1851 Census) are:
Janet b 1818
Ann b 1826
David b 1827
Archibald b 1828
Bethia b 1833
and a 4 yr old neice called Janet Shaw.

I couldn't find a marriage between William and Helen (and would dearly like to track the line into the 18th C) but as anyone who has tried to find Stewarts will know, searching for Stewarts in 18th/19th Century Lanarkshire is like hunting a needle in a needlestack...

Any help welcome, even if it's just to point out what I've missed.

thanks

Lanarkshire / Greenleeshill Farm - Stewart (Strang/Scott...Leggat?)
« on: Monday 01 June 09 13:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've been researching my family and have landed at Greenleeshill Farm in Cambuslang, Farmed by John Stewart (1809-1887) who is my ggg grandfather, married to Janet Strang (East Kilbride)

I know he was on the farm from 1841, through to 1881, died from injuries sustained in a coaching accident and the farm seems to vanish from the family, Janet dies later in Horne St, St Rollox at the same address as my Ggrandfather (her Grandson, also John Stewart, son of William and Elizabeth (ne Craig))

I'm trying to find out more about John, how he came to the farm and where is parents were (his birth record shows he was born in 1809 to William Stewart (a farmer) and Helen Hamilton, suggesting the were not married, though his death certificate has them both as Stewart , I can find no marriage record suggesting the death cert legitamised the relationship maybe?.)

the 1851 census shows many siblings also at the farm, and I know his daughter Janet married Archibald Scott..(posssibly later of Archibald Scott Ltd, coachbuilders Bellshill) and Jeanie married Robert Whiteford (not much detail as I've only just found this)

1841 census has him as an agricultural labourer,
1851 census has him as the farmer, with servants and empoying labourerers..

Did he accquire the farm? was it passed from William Stewart his father? and , as I couldn't find a will on SP, what happened to the farm as the family seem to have moved as one to St Rollox Parish around between 1890 and 1900 ish...

I know the farm appears to have been owned by an Agnes Leggatt recently, but I know little else..
other than this news story below suggesting it had been sold on...

any background that links any of this together would be most welcome..

Thanks
Caroline
