« on: Yesterday at 07:28 »
FindMyPast has British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms.

But not the GRO itself (online) or Anc*stry?

No.
I amended my previous post with TNA details.

The Common Room / Re: Accuracy of marriage records

I am under the impression that although civil birth registration started in 1837, it didn't become compulsory by law until 1875. Am I wrong?

Martin

Until 1875, the onus was on the Registrar to find and record births and deaths.
From1875, the onus was on the parents (for Births), or informant (for Deaths).

Spelling of names wasn't a strong point back in the day. ;)

The relevant column on the 1911 census asks for number of COMPLETE years of marriage. ;)
So a marriage in 1885.

Just as long as you pronounce Frome correctly!
Rhymes with broom; does NOT rhyme with Rome! ;D

Doesn't include Internment Camps?
There were 9 of these in WW2 Isle of Man.

Many churchyards have Burial Indexes that quote a grave reference.
Often worth seeking out.
Try local Family History Society or local Archive.
