Leicestershire / Re: Cyril Alfred wells 1905-1969

Alfred Bostok, there's a name from the past. My grandfather was Landlord of the Clarence Hotel in Wigston, he and grandma were great friends with Mr. Bostok. Grandpa would lend him money when he had a bad run with the gee-gees, and he took grandma out some evenings....I've sometimes wondered...
But no matter, sorry to butt into your thread. Dean. I'm quite sure your Cyril was seen in the Clarence, and laying a few bets quietly in there too!

Very best wishes to Trystan and Sarah on Rootschat's 20th anniversary. Also to all Rootschatters who do such sterling work and provide me with my little bit of entertainment every morning

I'm sure you'll all be having something stronger later, but in the meantime a cup of tea and cake served in Royal Albert 'Heirloom' bone china seems quite fitting.

Happy New Year!

The Common Room / Re: Was Tom Owen a clockmaker?
« on: Friday 08 December 23 10:44 GMT (UK)  »
clancam, is the clock's face brass or silvered? Brass is usually early, while silver became fashionable from the early 19th century.

Adding:  Ancestry have a Thomas Owen, born about 1770, buried at Alberbury in 1823. Alberbury is about 9 miles from Shrewsbury which is not far from Oswestry.

The Lighter Side / Re: Unfortunatel names
« on: Tuesday 14 November 23 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
I once read a blog about names. The writer contended that all the names with "bottom" were breeding out. Women with the name got married and the name ended. Men with the name died as bachelors, as no woman wanted to be lumbered with the name. How true that is, I do not know, but I can believe it.

Regards

Chas

My Mum had a friend whose name was Sidebotham. She refused to marry him unless he changed it. He did, but I don't know what to.

On another note, I worked with a lovely girl whose name was Kamiljit. She said she'd been teased at school and it was actually the name of a beautiful flower in India.

The Lighter Side / Re: Interesting Birth

Amusing, what a shame the surname isn't given.
Carol

Indeed it is - or should I be relieved it's not, as there's a possibility my elusive gt, gt, grandfather was born at Hull around that very time and I've earmarked a William as possible father. The girl might have had a brother.

I mean, say it ran in the family... :o

The only bungalow I know of just there is next door to Attfield's Farm Shop. I don't know it's name though, sorry.

The Lighter Side / Re: Discoveries that wow you/others but are quite common.

Not me, but I'll never forget being in -a very quiet - Leicestershire Records Offiice when suddenly a very loud voice exclaimed "Oh, it's Uncle Will!". A couple of American women over to do their family history were searching the 1881 census. They were quite beside themselves with awe and I sat there thinking yes, i know that feeling, but was well used to delightful discoveries by that time.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry's new dna test
« on: Thursday 14 September 23 18:59 BST (UK)  »
The offer arrived in my eMail today.

When I asked my Dog if she would like to take a DNA test, she just stood and stared at me.

I tried a different tack, “would you like to know your heritage, you know, to know where you came from?”

Nothing, just the look, again.

“Look, will you stop staring at me like that?  If you answer my question I’ll give you one of your favourite bickie treats”

Nothing, just the look.

She then got bored, picked up her favourite toy and went to bed.

She looks a bit worried. I reckon there's something in her family history she'd rather you didn't find out!  ;)
