Family History Beginners Board / Origins of Thornton family
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I have previously posted a topic searching for Thorntons living in preston, and have been helped by Moisefish and Duck who have been great and helped me loads, however i'am stuck on my 3rd greatgrandfather James Thornton born c1807/12?, despite The help of Moisefish and duck we have come up blank and cannot find his baptizim records as they seem to be missing, i am maybe thinking that the family came from somewhere else maybe Yorkshire or London? The Thornton Family were very wealthy and were importers of foreign wine and spirits est 1717 in preston.James Married Hannah Booth Daug of Nathaniel Booth esq,we think that his father was Thomas Thornton no plave or D.O.B whio married Ellen Rainford?
the family also have ties with Matthew Brown The brewer with Thomas N jnr marrying Helen Brown.
they were all very strong Catholics.
really needing advice as we have searched all records for lancashire and there is nothing in the record office.
Many thanks

Hello all,
i posted a topic a few weeks ago re Clarks as i was looking for information on my Grandfather,
Peter Gibson Grant Clark born in Moffat, with the advise of another rootschater i ordered his birth certificate,....it gave me two pieces of information 1) He was illagitamte 2) his mother was a Marion Jandine Clark ( domestic servant)born 1900...i have managed to find Marion's parents John Clark who was a coachman and Maggie Gibson Clark nee (???) also a domestic servent, both lived or worked for a family called Grant.......
i was wondering if anybody could help me find Maggies maiden. but also give me any ideas on Peters Father i was thinking that Marion had a relationship with one of the Grant's she worked for and that's how he got Grant in his name?, it would be good to find out as my late uncle, myself and my son have the name Grant in are name's.
many thanks in advance

Hi all,

you could try looking at the we were Rhodesians website as it is a good source if your family ever served in the Rhodesian Armed forces, Rhodesia became independent in 1964? so prior to that it was a British colonie

Hi Trevor,

Much appreciated, sadly both my grandparents have passed away and died in Zimbabwe and all their processions were taken by the state my mum tried a solicitor but had no joy.

I have spoken to my mum with regards to his service but she didn't really have much information and all she new was that he was a signaller, when he emigrated to Rhodesia he joined the Rhodesian Signals Corps and retired as Warrant Officer First Class(RSM), He fought in the Bush war along with my dad and uncles.
i will try and have a look at the records as would like to see what ship he served on.
many thanks Keith

Hi Simon
Thanks again for the information, but could i ask for your advice again?
When you sent me the 1810/20 catholic census you said that there were two family's,

 31 Bridge st
Ellen 52c , Margaret 19, John 18 and James 13

 Molyneux square
Ellen 45, John 22, Robert 19 and James 9

which do you think is more likely to be the correct family?

Cheers Simon,

If there was no baptisim records for James or Hannah at the R.O where would i look? or where would i go from here does this mean i am stuck or is it still possible to find out the information?,
I've ordered Thomas snr's marrage certificate not James so will that give both his parents names including mothers maiden name?.
I wonder if there are baptisim records for his siblings? John c1801 who was 8 in the 1810 catholic census, and Margaret c1800 who was 9?.
regards Keith
