Aberdeenshire / Re: Parents of Ann Henderson (abt 1853 -1923)
« on: Monday 13 November 23 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
I know I am very late to the party, but I've just come across this thread & thought I'd add my 2c.

The distant cousin's message in the original post mentions Mary Findlater, I'm pretty sure she has followed the wrong Ann Henderson to get there.

My great-grandmother was also an Anne Henderson. She was born b ca 1853 in Premnay to Arthur Henderson & Janet Tough. Arthur's mother (Anne's grandmother) was Mary Findlater b 1766 in Oyne, her mother was Jean Watt, daughter of George.

To add to the confusion my Anne also died in 1923, but in Forglen, Banffshire, she had married John Fraser in Banff in 1883.

I have used BDM certs, census, monumental inscriptions & parish registers to follow this line.

Hopefully this might help clariify and/or eliminate some names.

Helen

Somewhere I have a pic of Robert Valdar Greig which I can pass on to you assuming I can find it!

Once again I'm late to the party.

If you managed to find your photo would I be able to have a copy please? Robert Valder Greig was my husband's great-great grandfather via his son Robert Greig (b 1864 in Inverurie) and his 3rd wife, Mary Jane Thomson.

thank you
Helen

Another Tough descendant here (through Janet TOUGH, 1810-1856, daughter of George TOUGH & Jean STEPHEN, and wife of Arthur HENDERSON).

Just to say that the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Family History site has the index to their published MI's available to everyone on line, and for members of the society there is also access to the unpublished MI's.

Go to https://anesfhs.org.uk/member-home  and look under the Database heading

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Cause of death help

I would certainly have a look at the newspapers. OH & I both have an antecedant who died as a result of alcohol-one was of dissipated habits and died of intemperance, the other froze in the snow after a payday binge. Both were reported in the local papers  and interestingly enough, both were in 1856 in the North East of Scotland.

Forfarian-I have a couple of Waddell's but none that married a Boyd at that time.

There is John Waddell who married Helen Cleland (nee Buchanan, ~1810-1864) and had a daughter, Margaret Waddell in 1843 in Kilsyth.  (Helen later married James Boyd in Kilsyth in 1846, and they were the parents of John Boyd (1847-1905) Chief Constable of Glasgow Police)

The other is Jeanette Waddell (1811-1899) from Whitburn, Wln, daughter of George Waddell & Catherine Calder. Jeanette married Peter Shanks of Slamannan Sti, and in 1835 they emigrated to the USA.

Darren, I am sorry to hear of your cousin's illness, it is always a shame when we can no longer pursue our hobbies due to ill health.

John Boyd & Isobel Small were my 5xgreat grandparents via

James Boyd (1782-1861) & Elizabeth Patrick
James Boyd (1808-1877) & Ann Johnston Hay
William Boyd (1841-1908) & Elisabeth Young
Ann Johnston Hay Boyd (1868-1942) & Peter Johnston
thence my grandmother & mother.

I would be delighted & honoured to share your cousin's information, and shall PM you

Helen

Thanks for all the information, I have found his medal card-no MM mentioned. Ah well, just keep looking.

Over the years we have been able to get our submariners service record and some photos.

Thankyou for that, it seems the https://archive.org/details/morayshirerollof1921mora has combined his RH number (17910) with the Seaforth regiment.

I don't know where the 'Dunbar' comes into it.

And here I was casting aspersions and thinking he may have had an 'imagination' like his nephew (my grandfather, whose stories were not always grounded in fact)

I realise I've come late to the party, but I wonder if you are able to find anything on George/Robert ROY.
This is taken from the Morayshire Roll of Honour

"ROY, Robert George. No 17910, Sgt., 2nd Seaforths; born at Parish of Drainie, 15 Sept 1880; Joined at Glasgow, 4th August 1914.; served in France and Salonica; six times wounded; awarded M.M. Son of George Roy, 259b High St, Elgin. Occupation; dock labourer."

but I can find no further military information. His parents were George ROY & Mary GORDON, married November 27 1886.

I see you are interested in the K Class submarines, my grandfather's brother, James McLennan, was a stoker on the K3. Having read the "K Boats: Steam-Powered Submarines in World War I" by Don Everitt I think he could be excused just about everything.
