Hi, James C Bruce is on his marriage cert and James Chalmers Bruce is on his death cert. You're right I can't find a marriage cert or register for james and Isabella but I did find one for Isabella and John McDiarmid and that has her parents as James and Ann ( m. s. williamson ) which we spoke about earlier.
On the marriage cert she signs with an X as does the Isabella Bruce that registers the illegitimate James ( stat births 164/00 0008). Interestingly, the 1881 census for James and Ann Bruce has Alexander Murray living in the house, a grandson of James and Ann, this is another name that has featured in my husbands family, his name is Robert Alexander Murray Bruce and his uncle was Alexander Murray Bruce. It looks quite feasable that this could be the correct family, but , I still have this little niggle about the Chalmers name!!
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my thoughts!

Yes, I wondered about this one too, it was looking the most likely one till I discovered the Chalmers connection. In the 1891 census Isabella Bruce has taken the name McDiarmid and has James Bruce living with her in Portsoy  along with Niel McDiarmid(10) and Jemima McDiarmid (5). James Bruce was 18 at this time and was an apprentice cooper in Portsoy. So, this was all looking likely although there is no positive proof yet, until, the name Chalmers popped up in this other family! I also have abirth cert (Stat Births 164/00 0008) for a James Bruce illegitimate son of Isabella Bruce of High St Buckie which would be the correct age too.  It would be so good if someone knew of the family but there doesn't even seem to be many people researching them.

My James and Isabella were both deceased at the time of James Bruce and Andrina Taits marriage in 1907.
This is so confusing as there were so many James and Isabella Bruces around the same time...who said this was ever going to be easy!!
There is also confusion as his death certificate has him aged 70 in 1944 but his marriage cert has him 28 in 1907.  Family stories has it that he lied about his aged to marry Anderina who would have been 12 years younger than him if his death age is correct.
On his death certificate ( 19 April 1944) it names his father as James Bruce, seaman, merchant service (deceased) and mother as Isabella Bruce M.S. Bruce (deceased). Marriage cert states exactly the same.

Sent a reply but not sure if you got it. I know of this family but I don't think it's the one i'm looking for. My James Chalmers Bruce has Isabella Bruce M.S.Bruce entered as his mother on both his marriage and death certificates.

I would like to try and find more info on the Alexander Bruce and Jane Chalmers family.

Thanks for your reply

Since posting my last msg I have stumbled on a bit more info that may or may not be relevent.

Have found an Isabella Bruce born on 10 Aug 1850 in Alvah Banffshire to parents Alexander Bruce and Jane Chalmers.

Could this be 'my' Isabella? Any information would be much appreciated.

Does anyone know anything about James Chalmers Bruce born c. 1874 in Buckie. His parents were James Bruce and Isabella who's maiden name was also Bruce. They were both deceased at the time of James's wedding to Andrina Tait in Shetland on 1st March 1907. One of thwe witnesses at the wedding was Alexander R Bruce.

James was a Cooper (journeyman) at the time of his marriage, does anyone know if records were kept of apprentices by the Coopers that taught them?

James and Andrina went on to have 10 children the youngest of whom was another James Chalmers Bruce my late father-in-law.

Hope someone can be of help!

Regards

Barbara :)
